Everything but the kitchen sink (no Warmoth content)

Wow, Steve, That's a great photo. I just checked my camera and it doesn't have that option. Drat.

I love this!

Not quite the same as a Warmoth body or neck arriving, but it's still cool when parts arrive...

(Needs a little finessing.)

A couple of logo things:

But where on a guitar does this go?:

Inlaid in the headstock? Time machine??  ???

Nah, nah, it goes with the throttle dial. You know ... when you wanna go faster!

A different style on the drawing board today. Maybe I should try something like this instead of the retro/kitschy stuff(?)

I like it. Not normally a fan of anything pointy, but in that design it's subdued enough that I could learn to love it.

Work continues on the other things in this thread, but I managed to obtain some MDF (just for templates, honest), so thought I'd move something off the drawing board and into the real world - such as it is at the moment.

Obviously I was never going to make the metal thing, so mad Teisco 'tribute' it is.

Printed some lines on 8 pieces of paper:

Stuck the pieces of paper together:

What do you mean, is that accurate? Of course it is, I used masking tape.

The victim will be this large lump of conker tree (horse chestnut if that doesn't translate):

Looks like maple, but is very light. It even has some figure, so might look quite pretty with a nice stain. Don't worry though, I'm planning on covering it up with a big ugly pickguard and a 10 foot finish using some crazy paint.

Next time: templates. I'm hoping to move this one along reasonably quickly - until I get to the electrics at least, as I can't afford the pickups I want... We'll worry about that when we get there.

I like your design. Can't wait to see it all cut out.

That wood looks a lot like alder. You mentioned it was light. The Engineering Toolbox lists chestnut as a bit heavier than alder but you know how each piece can vary. I'll be interested to know how light the body is when it's cut out and ready for paint.

Interesting re the weight, though horse chestnut is in the same genus as the buckeyes (the seeds - the conkers - look similar to buckeyes) rather than 'true' chestnuts, The Wood Database does list it as having a similar density to alder. This surprised me as I was expecting it to me more like basswood; it's a big lump of wood, 1.85"/47mm thick and plenty big enough for a Strat, and just feels very light. Subjective of course and as you say, individual pieces can vary.

Maybe the fact that all the other wood stock I have - black walnut, sycamore maple and cherry - is all really heavy is affecting my judgement.

I'll make sure I weigh it...

Cool, thanks.

That had to come out of a fairly sizable tree. It'll be nice to know if it routs as smoothly as alder. I guess that would depend on how hard it is.

A rough measurement and calculation gives a density of 415.6 kg/m3 (25.9 lbs/ft3) which is basswood territory. Interesting...
