You’re threads are among my fav here.

Thanks Frank, the feeling's mutual - I apologise for my lack of comment on your lovely Mr Doot, but it's made me slightly sad*. BTW, do you enjoy watching paint dry too?

Anyway, to keep the whirlwind of updates coming, I made a big hole in the back:

c4cshd2.jpg

There's one on the inside too (and yes, it is meant to be like that; I can't quite remember why, but that's how it is in the drawings, so it must be right:

Stay tuned for more - including thrilling and blindingly obvious template-making/routing advice!

*I may explain this at some point...

Mr Doot takes no offense!

Can't wait to see what's next.  Watching this is like listening to an interesting song and trying to guess where the bridge will lead.

Cover rebate cut and cover template made:

I think that's all I can do to the body back - apart from (I've just remembered) making some channels for the pickup leads.

There will probably be another delay now, while I wait for some 'special equipment' I need do peculiar things to the top before I can glue it on...

Looks good. I'm curious about the size of that hole in the center of the cover ledge. Seems too large for a screw.

Because I did this the 'wrong way round'* - cutting the cavity outline before the cover rebate - I drilled a hole through so I could use a (necessarily larger) screw from the inside to locate the templates. It will get filled and re-drilled for a normal-size cover screw.

*Not a mistake as such, just another element of the masterplan I won't scrutinise in retrospect.

Right. Never argue with success :icon_biggrin:

Another thrilling update!

We have a cavity cover:

lcg57i5.jpg

It's just walnut veneer stuck on to 3 ply pickguard sheet. Amazing prizes await those who can guess why there's a funny-shape, roughly-cut hole in it.*

Serious question - any thoughts on whether it is actually worth routing some wiring channels before gluing the top on. They'll probably just fill with glue anyway and there won't be any very difficult long holes to drill if I just do it that way. (I'm aware of the trick of gluing upside-down to avoid this issue, but I'm planning to use screws through the top at the pickup locations during the glue-up as it needs to be precisely positioned - trying to do that from underneath is likely to be awkward.)

*All prizes imaginary and will exist only in the imaginations of the imaginers.

Looks cool. Is that a jackplate mounting hole in the cover? The two mounting screws line up perfectly for that.

Looks good, and a nice fit.

I'm imagining that hole is for a thumbprint reader that enables the pickups. Keeps the riff-raff from unauthorized play.

Another 3 months gone, so it must be time for an update - since the last one I've spent most of the time sulking, because my 'mystery hole purpose' riddle was solved so quickly. Cagey, how did you guess that?

...

[Excessive/unnecessary detail warning]

The 'special equipment' mentioned above arrived a while back in the shape of this laser-cut template:

Transferred to a thicker working template... (Several pence saved on the laser cutting by leaving all the cuts straight):

...and the top cut:

Here's some perforated 1 mm 304 stainless steel:

TbU43u8.jpg

Not a great photo, but you can just about tell that I've polished it, apart from a strip along the top.

The question now is, can I snip it?

AXVXxOK.jpg

No prizes for this one; I will update again very soon - honest.

Well that's pretty freaky looking!  I'm glued to my seat* wanting to see more**  :headbang:

* - not really.
** - yes really.

So can I snip it? Yes I can. Of course I can - I'd already snipped it before the last post; I can't be trusted. You might think it would have been better to saw it, but hacksaw vs stainless steel, even if only 1mm (0.04") thick, proved to be an unpleasant and unmanageable contest. YMMV and all that.

Here's a couple of snipped bits in situ:

I am making life difficult for myself. Finishing will be fun.

...

Couldn't think of anything else to do, so I rough cut the top to shape...:

wIfolI6.jpg

Can you tell which is the walnut top and which is the plastic-pseudo-woodgrain-kitchen-worktop-planing-sled-base?

Finally, for this instalment, at risk of ridicule from my peers for my lack of 'proper' clamps, I glued the top to the other bit. There is a guitar body in there somewhere:

fA8rkNj.jpg

If I don't follow this up again tomorrow, the gluing/clamping didn't work out well and I'll be enjoying a nice open fire.

Well it's not fire wood yet.

Out of the clamps and the top sanded a bit closer - about 1/16" shouldn't present the router with any problems...:

Dh1bu3G.jpg

...and indeed it didn't; no tear-out here:

g6VM3KL.jpg

I did still take heed of the uphill/downhill thing, even if it was just a small trim.

The glue joint is probably acceptable - there's an optional feature in the plans that will become more likely to be used if it's less than pretty after some sanding and grain-fill etc.

Hopefully progress will continue anon. Neck pocket and pickup routing coming up. I'm still vacillating between hardtail and trem... :dontknow:

Neck pocket routed:

ME1qqDA.jpg

With a neck in it:

YQltV5k.jpg

The 'corners' on the neck heel look a bit out of place next to the rounded (and to be contoured) body heel - especially after seeing KOABUILD's recent work - so dare I re-shape it a little? We'll see.

Still, it's looking more like a guitar body.

Lookin' good, there.

Yeah, I'd re-shape it. You can just take the sharpness down without changing the profile. It'll feel better, too.

That's beautiful and clever, as usual.  Always wanted to put the jack plate back there!  Really cool build!

Seems a bit quiet round here, so here's a little pseudo-arty teaser - roundover done!

vwrQEZ5.jpg

Looks like I have some (more) sanding to do.

Looking good, Pete.

That's some good looking lumber.  DO you have a laminate sandwiched between the (apparently) walnut top and the ash body?

Also, that horn appears reminiscent of the Ibanez horn shape that was current in the early-mid 1980's.  For comparison, The pictured guitar is a specimen of my first electric, an Ibanez Roadstar RS 315.  Dunno what the rest of your piece looks like, but I have never seen anything come out of your workshop that I wouldn't want one of for myself.  Thanks for taking us on your journey, even if you are keeping the windows blacked out for much of the trip.

Yrs,

Yeah, I noticed that too, good question.... Either way, that's looking real sweet so far!  :icon_thumright:

Thank you gents.

No, I think what you're just seeing is just the edge of the (yes, walnut) top where it hasn't been tortured by the rotating blades of the roundover bit. As I said - some sanding to do.

I do have strange plans for this area though - quite possibly strange enough for the whole thing to still end up as firewood.

I had one of those Roadstars too, but a cheaper and nastier one than yours. The horn shape here is actually inspired by (ok, stolen from) another Japanese design:

1967-Yamaha-SG5A-copy_WEB.jpg

For my purposes I've flipped it to put the long horn in the more usual location (and I can't blame Yamaha for the rest of the body shape). That said, it is also clearly similar to the Ibby, though mine isn't quite the same as either.

Oh, you're just seeing the mysterious limousine cruisin' on through; it's all champagne and top-dollar ladeez inside. This analogy does not work at all.

I will get the pickup routing done shortly...
