Custom Laminated body.

:kewlpics:
Hi guys,
Here is a good pic of one of the "blocks" being glued in place for the Van Halen guitar.
Now, you see the "end " grain on all those pieces.  If you can imagine the Brazilian cherry,  the Sugar Maple, and the Purple heart on end, that will present a panel that is readily accessible to be glued to the next panel or block , if you will.
Trying to glue to end grain is a cardinal sin in the world of cabinet work. It is just crap. So if you can make all your blocks glue to side grain,  you stand a better chance of success in the glueing process.
  Jeff.

Hi guys,  still no word from Doug. I visit his shop Friday,  so hopefully I can get some pics then.
This pic is a method I am going to try to incorporate into my " Def Leppard " Union Jack bass.  Using end grain as the top surface as opposed to laminated panels in the Van Halen stratocaster.  Reason for that , when you glue your "panels" or "blocks" together,  you are utilizing the side surface  of the lumber where better gluing will take place.
Keep in mind I learned a very valuable lesson on the Van Halen stratocaster.  Those small cracks are a potential problem in the future of the guitar so I am trying to avoid that process a second time.
With everything glued in blocks with side grain exposed,  good glue "lock" should be achieved.
        More to follow.
        Jeff.
What VH stratocaster are you speaking of??? :icon_scratch:

Hey guys, just wanted to let everyone know Doug had a water line break at his shop here in Sharonville Ohio.  He told me today things were a mess for a while but under control once again.
Thanks for being patient with my build. Working 70 hours a week on the truck does not allow much time in the woodshop/guitar shop.  So, thanks again for your patience.
      Jeff.

:band:
Yep, he said no damage to equipment,  just a big huge inconvenience to him, his shop and his wife Mara for a few days till they got it fixed.

:kewlpics:
Hi guys , sorry no pics yet. This is latest I got from Doug.  Needless to say he is swamped.
Jeff.

Not for nuthin', and forgive me if I'm sticking my nose where it doesn't belong, but if you are a paying customer then why is your job getting back-burnered for the Christmas rush? Seems to me that he should be telling those guys that he has a job on his bench that he's been putting off since, what, July? And needs to get it done? I dunno, maybe I'm missing something. This is a complicated thread. Lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta whathaveyous.

If work went into a FIFO (First In First Out) buffer and was performed at a constant rate, you'd be right, and probably from a social justice point of view, you're right. But, I don't think repair/modify/build shops schedule things as predictably as a many manufacturers can/will. You sorta play "Tetris" with the jobs, time slots, tools, etc. getting different things to fit as efficiently as possible, with the goal being to clear the work area/schedule for what's coming down.

Social justice is about pronouns and feelings, I’m talking about an agreement to complete work in exchange for payment. Shuffling jobs is to be expected in a shop environment, but you do eventually have to, you know, complete the jobs. “Sorry, nothing yet” after having the job on your bench for 5 months? I’d be asking some pointed questions. That’s all I’m saying.

Out of curiosity, is this the same guitar that was supposed to be completed and up on stage with the band in September? (it has been a meandering thread, entirely possible I’ve gotten confused?)

Me too!!!!
And too think is going up on stage with " Liliac " rock band on 14th of Sept . in Newark Ohio.  We are meeting the band that night.
Very excited about that!!

Yes, guys , I am just as frustrated as you are. However,  I have to give him the benefit of the doubt.  I can not crucify him because he is busy. I am busy too. So one the build is complete and it looks awesome,  the wait will be well worth it.
However,  on my next build, I may indeed be looking for a second choice on luthiers for assembly . Just got to wait and see how the stratocaster turns out.
Partially my fault,  I told Doug to take his time because I am not in a band and I have not even learned how to play guitar yet. So I am patient to the extent that I want the best possible craftsmanship money can buy. Being a master cabinet maker,  craftsmanship is everything to me.
      Talk to you guys soon!!

If you make cabinets, you can use a router with templates. Check out Faction Guitars pattern sets. He has Strat, Tele and other patterns as well. They will give you what you need to use and on the site, you can get the specs for how deep to make different sections (neck pocket, pickup cavities and control routs) and what roundover to use on the edges. Why don't you give it a go to make your own?

It really isn't as hard as one would think. Try it with some plywood or scrap wood to get the feel before you tackle one of your intricate lamination jobs. Once you get the body cut, sand and apply a finish or have someone else finish it if you wish. Hint: I make my initial pattterns from 1/4" MDF then when they're to my liking, I use those to make working patterns from 3/4" MDF. On any one body I have three patterns: one for the general shape, one for the pickup and neck cavities and one for the control routs. Oh, yeah, and another one for vibrato cavities if applicable. Work from a center line on your piece and it's not difficult. That way you aren't at the mercy of someone else's schedule.

yeah man this is straight up BS. I don't me to cuss but he's been making you wait forever and surely you were before some of these other fools he's priortizing. This is also some bs: I had a bad headache the other day so I bought some advil and while the pills tasted great like normal there was a business card for a personal massage service inside the bottle. Not trying to be gross but that means they're going to send a stranger to put their hands on you and I just didnt appreciate it because you can't just rub a head make the inside feel better. I called them and said "keep your ancillary services to yourself, if I wanted to get screwed over id use tylenol because it doesn't work".

Honestly, you need to have a conversation with him.  At the very least ask him to give a delivery date.  For every day pass that, 10% off.
If it was me I’d give him a deadline of Mon EOB. Being gracious in this area doesn’t help. I have a Tele body missing for 4 years now.

That's a pure truth. I've never gotten any help from the stuff for anything other than lightening my wallet, and don't know anybody who has.

Hi guys,
Appreciate all the good comments and maybe not so much the negative stuff.
I am man of extreme patience,  I know you guys are wanting to see the end result just as much as I do . I will probably be visiting Doug here real shortly to find out what's going on.
If you choose to leave my thread. I don't blame ya. All I can say , I ain't going nowhere.  I trust Doug and I will provide pics when they come available.
Those if you who are hanging in there with me till she is done, great!!! It sucks waiting,  but it will be worth it.
        Thanks Jeff.
