Yes, get "Audacity". It's a great freeware program. It works really well and is easy to use. IIRC you need to get the MP3 export plugin separately, it's free too!

If you have something like a Line 6 Box or some sort of guitar/computer interface you can record directly into Audacity. You can also use a mic plugged directly into your sound card, not a crisp but works too.

Thanks for the Audacity link Ken - it looks pretty powerful. I scoured the forum for different ideas and am trying to figure out what might work best. Hannaugh has something called a Tascam and apparently some amps like the Line6 Spider can record and have built in jam tracks and FX. I just have to figure out where I can get the most recording bang for the buck...
