Building my first body.

Can I get away with it, or is it too busy for the body?
I know Black Ebony would be the classiest option, but I tend to dislike plain fretboards.

I love the look that board - I don't personally see it as being too busy, and strings and frets do plenty to break that up visually, anyway.  Definitely don't have any kind of dots or inlays, but go for it, IMO.

That is a beaut of a board.  The variations will not be that noticeable when the frets are added.  The contrast from the shiny next to the dark of the board will tone it down quite a bit.  And you will still have a gorgeous board when you examine it a little closer.

Normally, I'm not a fan of Macassar. In my mind, Ebony is black and that's all there is to it. But, that is a stunning piece. I would also normally not recommend anything that would take away from a figured top, but I don't think that would happen here. In this case, I think that neck would be like diamond earrings against a diamond necklace. The body would still get the big look, and the neck would be an enhancing accessory. If it were me, I'd snatch that piece up quick before somebody else does (like me!), even if you don't use it on this guitar. Most Macassar looks like shite compared to that. That's just inspired natural art.

Edit: Corey's right - if you put inlays on that, you should be punished.

Awesome, but please tell me "21 frets," is a typo!

Lol. 'spose I should explain.

I'm not in the mood to deal with the overhang and gap, and I'm used to 21 frets on my Strat, so it's not a hindrance to my technique. With the Floyd, I can get that last note on the high E string easily, as well.
I really wish I could have 24 frets though. That bothered me for the longest time with Strats, but I got used to it.

Also, worth explaining. I normally cannot stand guitars with no inlays unless they are unlined fretlii or classical guitars. I'm going to try to get past my OCD about it with this guitar. There is nothing "incomplete" about the specs on this guitar, so I have no real reason to think it looks incomplete without inlays.

If you've been playing more than a year, you'll be fine. Besides, the side dots are quite noticeable on an Ebony 'board, so you'll probably adjust to not having training wheels in no time flat. In any event, that's a beautifully spec'd neck. I'm quite confident you're going to be very pleased with it.

And now, we dance!

I'm not worried about needing inlays to play, hell, I play an unlined fretless neck on one of my Jazz basses.
It's just that it looks incomplete and cheap to me most of the time. Like the neck is missing a feature.

Nonsense. It looks classy and sophisticated. You're getting rid of the training wheels! They're finally gone, along with the braces and barrettes and glasses and all those other unavoidably visible handicap helpers. Embrace your guitar playing studliness! People see that, and it's almost as good as playing a fretless. It makes them shrink in awe. "Holy stringbenders, Batman! How does he do that?" <grin>

Wait! Something is horribly wrong! Cagey must be held hostage somewhere, sending us hidden messages. It's not a beautifully spec'd neck at all! It has a Floyd nut!

Some Walnut colored wood filler that I conveniently found a tube of in the garage is fixing up the router dings. :blob7:

Ok, so I'm just about ready to order a Warmoth neck for this thing. Someday I'll take a stab at building a neck, but for now, I want a nice one from Warmoth.

The shaft will be Indian Rosewood, the fretboard will be Ebony. The question is, Black or Macassar?

Joseph, I withdraw my comments of last night - I am officially in favor of this fretboard.  And NO INLAYS or I'll hunt you down like a dog.

I ordered it with that fretboard and no inlays. :blob7:

I just found out that there is Exif data on the current Warmoth gallery pics. Very cool.

The image of the Pau Ferro board on my Jazz bass has no data on it, however.
