As long as it's shaped & polish well, I'd always go for some for of metal nut. Strings don't get hitched up on well-polished metal and it means your open strings will sound closer to fretted notes. Otherwise, there's not really any difference. The pain of shaping them is the only real drawback. May as well go for it if you can get it shaped and fitted well, and don't if you can't.
