Hey guys

I'm looking at buying a nice high wattage solid state amp but im' confused about the impedance for the speakers...
My Rivera has a switch to change between 4 8 and 16 ohms.  but i've never used a solid state head before and im alittle confused about the setup and whats safe to use with one.

that is if its ever unsafe to use one  or not?

am I restriced to 2 and 4 ohms?
what about a 16 ohm cab? thats all i'd have to use it with once I get it.

Generally, on a solid state head, you can use a higher impedance cabinet on a lower impedance head.

A head rated 400w @ 2ohms and 320w @ 4ohms, will give you something like 200w @ 8ohms or maybe only 100w at 16ohms.

NEVER go lower than the minimum number.  That is, never put a 2 ohm load on a head rated for 4 ohms.  At best you blow fuses.  At worst you blow the output.

Its a Crate GT3500H.  I didn't even know they existed till a couple days ago.

for my amp rig I use a 100 Watt Tube amp and a 120 watt solid state combo amp...  the 2 sounds together works really well. the tubes push all the mids and give you that warm tube sound and the transistors give you that scooped digital/metallic sound and with both going at once its a really nicely well rounded sound. Solid Brick.

but my little combo amp can't keep up really well to the 100 watter.  so i 've wanted a good half stack but I'm not really into Randall and I really like the Crate sound ( I know a lot of people dont) I"m not really crazy abou their tube amps though.. But i just found this thing and its been discontinued so i want to snatch it up.  Then all I need is a good 4ohm cab i guess.

(I never play with a full stack)

400 watts, 320 watts, or "ONLY' 100 watts.

What stadiums are you folks playing?

Keep scratchin' your head and back out of the fire exit like you did in the vegetarian thread.

Okay. What did I type to deserve that bit of nastiness?

Keep in mind a 400w amp is only twice as loud as a 40w amp....

So multiplying the wattage by ten to get double the output, isn't a crock?
+1 for Phil Jones

Ya, I love it when my sources are right.

Nothin at all, sorry if i seemed nasty............whoops :(

And sorry back at ya'. I am in a foul, ugly mood tonight, and probably should not be posting on the internet at all.

Time to whistle "If I Only Had A Brain" from The Wizard Of Oz...

???

In my experience. Solid State Watts are much different from Tube watts.

My other guitarist playes a JCM800 100watts and a Mode Four (both marshalls if anybody is unsure) 350watts.

the tube amp still pushes out more sound with the volume set around 2.5 compared to around 4 on the MF.

Tube amps are supposed to push more sound out aren't they?

That's internet nonsense. Loud depends more on how efficent your speakers are. Solid state and tube are both great choices, period. There is no better, there is no lesser. Class A tube amps are not inherently better than Class A/B amps. It's not a rating system. If it sounds good to you, it's good.

Golly Gee-Whiz, I just made The Gear Page obsolete.

What I really want to know is why I move the volume knob about a millimeter higher on a Fender Deluxe and the volume goes from barely audible to scorching loud.  I can't get past 2 without busting my eardrums.  I'm trying to figure out what 3-10 is supposed to be used for if I'm going deaf at 3 and who thought it was good engineering to make a volume knob so insanely sensitive.

My fender deluxe does the same thing, but mine goes to 12.. so mine must be louder. haha.
