alcohol based stains vs. water based

got my first finish coming up and i can't make up my mind what to use water or alcohol i know I can spray alcohol based but not sure what to use really whats best? any recommendations?

I think many people here prefer alcohol to water, weather it's related to finishes or not.  :icon_jokercolor:

I prefer to use Aniline or MEK dyes mixed in a blend of lacquer thinner and lacquer retarder or in regular lacquer for shading colors for bursts. It works the same as alcohol or shellac solvent but has a little more open time. I also use some pigmented Colors In Oil for vintage style finishes. Water raises the grain of wood so I stay away from that.  Check out Stew-Mac or Luthiers mercantile as a source for these products.
