agile 50's strat project

Ugh, that nasty poly gets all whitish when you brutalize it...

Let's sand it down with some #150 and apply the holy trinity, lacquer thinner, belt dressing and super-penetrating oil!

Voila! Starting to look relic'ed; need to let it sit and gray up the raw wood...

Jack!

My hat's off to you.  that looks great!  :headbang:

Why is this thread inspiring me to do something very bad to a guitar body  :icon_scratch:

I dont like relic guitars but these looks like too much fun to be legal.

haha me too, except i do like the relic look. if done well, that is. i doubt any "relic" i could come up with would look realistic, but it looks like it would be fun!

I am not usually a big fan unless it was done really well.. I think Jack and Trevor will do that!
my post was not exactly serious btw, I just wanted an excuse to light a squire on fire!!! I don't expect a burnt squire with an inch of poly will ever look reliced  :icon_biggrin:

This one made me lawl.  Did you photo and throw it?

Tonar, you've done some relics, right?

Relicing is against my religion.  :laughing7:

Just kidding!  Sure I've violated perfectly good guitar finishes and it makes me seasick every time.  :laughing7:

? We're having fun playing with $79 bodies....

I was just kidding around.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen any of your relics, do you not take photos of your heretical creations?

Update - got some hardware bits from W (who ironically are the cheapest)

starting to look like an old strat now...

The plan for the pickguard is synthetic steel wool, then a coffee soaking.  The plan for the bridge and other hardware is to dull them up, scratch them a bit, then soak em!  then a little WD40 and some dirt.  Interestingly the fakest looking parts are those knobs.

I did that last time I found a body in my mancave... nothing happened after that..
Hmm, that's strange. Well, I DO know United kills guitars.
I remember that. I think I lost the link to the website though and never heard the final results. Video was hilarious though.

Looking great Trevor!  Have you considered the mutriatic acid treatment for the bridge/other hardward?

Trevor,
You can instantly rust the metal parts by pouring some muriatic acid in a coffee can and suspending the hardware in a metal basket over the acid (don’t put it in the acid).  The fumes will corrode the metal very quickly and it will look like real ageing.  Be very careful with the acid and check the stuff often for the patina you are after.  If you leave it in to long it will get so rusted you won’t be able to use it.

Neoprene gloves, goggles and a respirator please, we don’t want you getting hurt.

This will not work on Chrome...I have tried.  You 1st have to take the plating off.

Gentlemen,

I'm an enviromentaist.  No nasty chemicals for me.

Speaking of nasty chemicals, I roughed up the pickguard surfaces and put them in a bath of coffee and coke.  Let's see what happens:

coffee works great - almost too well. I've gone too dark every time I've done it and had to bleach the parts a little to make them look right.
