A Tale of Two Teles

That's a really sharp hunk of lumber, but I just can't get next to Tele headstocks. Maybe someday, but it took me 45+ years to get next to Tele bodies. At least now I love those, as they are clearly a subtle part of God's plan for all guitarists. Maybe in another 45 years I'll warm up to the headstock shape.

No, Cagey, you won't.  :toothy10:  Or shouldn't, and here's why:  All considerations of visual aesthetic aside, when you pick up a Tele with a burnished neck, it wants to slip out of your hand, and there's no "lip" (as a Strat would have) to stop it from doing so. You need to take the thing with a death grip.  I'll never get another tele headstock for that very practical reason.

It's true - burnished necks are slippery. But, it's more the aesthetic for me. Tele headstock looks like the result of an excited man's sudden exposure to some boner-killing event, like stepping on a lego block in your bare feet or remembering an upcoming alimony payment  :laughing7:

A pick guard for blue.  It is a brushed aluminum.  I ordered a neck too.  I will keep you guessing for 5-6 weeks on this one.

Pickups and pick guards.  The neck arrived from Warmoth for the blue one.  Its roasted maple and rosewood.  We are still undecided on the neck for the pine one.  All hardware and pick ups are reliced.  The blue one will have a control plate that matches the guard and will have brass knobs too.

I really like the way you got the grain to show on the blue one. That's a fine finish.

For the pine one, I'd probably go with a neck that's as close to the body color as possible.

Both should be really cool when finished.

That blue/brushed aluminum/aged chrome really looks like a winter design. Very cold and gray. Maybe do some Gary Hoey Christmas tune treatments on it  :laughing7:

It's a tough call. But, I think I'd start with it on the Pine body.

Nice thing about modular instruments: parts can often be promiscuous.

I'd say the pine Tele also...the 'blue one' is callin' out for ebony or all maple...IMHO, that is...

I like that neck on the pine. As Ape suggested, perhaps ebony for the blue. Maybe a nice piece of macassar. Sorta look like an old pair of boot sticking out of well worn jeans...

:-\

I also think it looks best on the pine one.

some work on the neck is completed.

I installed the tuners and water slide.  This is my 1st go around with these GFS tuners.  They look so cool with the solid brass knobs.  I have had good success with their other tuner I figured I would give these a shot.  Not as smooth as my GOTOHs but they were about 1/4 the price.  I did relic the tuners a bit too.

Against my better judgement I installed a fender water slide decal.  Looking at vintage instruments placement and style was all over the place.  This was the most common type and placement I did see.  I also did not take time to hide the water slide as they are visible on vintage instruments as well.  I find that a poly finish does not make the decal disappear as much as nitro does.  BTW...check out the bit of flame just above the nut....

That's a fine gift to find under the tree. Now, if there was only a way to have Santa pay for it........
