A Tale of Two Teles

Some progress pics.

The pine will need some light sanding an another coat of poly but is looking good.  The cracks finished with clear resin look unfilled in the right light.  Believe it or not they are filled and smooth.

The Blue swamp ash is right on target with what I hoped to achieve.  Looks like some well worn jeans.  Notice how the clear muted the blue and brought out the browns tones.

Those are both coming along nicely. The blue is just right on that Ash, and I love the grain surrounding that knot in the Pine. Creates a sort of 3D effect that leads you to believe you're looking into a deep hole.

I am thinking a roasted maple neck would look fantastic on the blue one.  The jury is still out on the pine.

Thanks Cagey for the kind words.

I'll tell ya - I've gotten to where I think all guitars should have a roasted Maple neck. They don't eat any frequencies, so you can get any tone you want out of them with some judicious EQ. They're light weight. They're not expensive, and they burnish up to a super-fine finish that's a joy to play. Put any fretboard you want on there with some stainless or gold frets, and what's not to love?

That blue is just right with the brown accents. I agree with Kevin that a roasted maple neck is the hot ticket for it. The pine is really cool with the undetectable fill in the cracks.

Amazing! It really does look like there's no fill in the cracks. Unbelievable. And very cool.
And the 3D hole effect ... Now it's impossible to unsee. :icon_thumright:

This would look killer too but a little rich for my blood.

That's a really sharp hunk of lumber, but I just can't get next to Tele headstocks. Maybe someday, but it took me 45+ years to get next to Tele bodies. At least now I love those, as they are clearly a subtle part of God's plan for all guitarists. Maybe in another 45 years I'll warm up to the headstock shape.

I wish Warmoth would make other necks with a tele Heel.  I suppose I would call.  It would be cool to have a Warhead!!!

All my Teles have Warheads except one with a Strat headstock. I may have to sell that one. But, they all have Strat heels. You know Strat heels will fit in Tele pockets without modification, right? Just not vice-versa. Regardless, I'm sure if you asked for it you could get a Tele heel on a Warhead-topped neck.

Yeah...I know they fit.  I am just anal bout the gaps.  I guess a pickguard will cover it.  Can you post a photo of a Warhead tele?

There's the one that won the September GOM...

Which reminds me - I gotta get that little lovely in my sig one of these days.

Then, there's this one, which is a bit more traditional...

The other ones are packed away. But, you've seen them. Of the two black ones, one's a Warhead and one's Strat head. And now that I think about it, the metallic black cherry one has a Warmoth headstock.

Those two certainly are. The others I'd have to check, but I strongly suspect they're 25 1/2" scale necks.

No need.  The square bottom was a tell tale sign.  I am going with the 24 3/4 too.

I don't notice the difference now the way I used to. But, I don't rely on muscle memory as much as I used to, either. Back when I was playing more complex stuff, some of it was sorta automatic. Fingers just went where they were supposed to as long as the destinations didn't move due to dimensional changes. I don't play as much these days so when I do, I have to be much more deliberate. Scale length isn't quite as important because I'm watching what I'm doing.

I just prefer the smaller scale.  I have always had to peek occasionally.
