Absolutely stunning!

That looks absolutely great!

I wonder what kind of results that technique would yield using True Oil.

Thank you!

I finished the 5th Coat of Tung Oil this afternoon. Its turning out better and better every day.  :icon_biggrin:  I used a Scotch-Brite finishing pad(Thanks for the tip Cagey!) on it first and then applied a thin layer of Tung Oil with a soft cloth. I think I'll continue this method for the next 6 days and then let cure for a week. Last I'll apply the conductive shielding paint and finally apply some Wax.

I saw this neck in the in-stock showcase show up this week and wondered if this was going to be my neck ( same choice of woods and 32").  ??? My neck has been delayed for another week or two from what they told me when I called to check on progress...Hmmmm....Ordered body and neck within 2 days of each other.

This neck got a chip in it during construction and looks like they had to repair and mark down pretty low. I would have taken that neck for that discounted price  :laughing7:

Update: Done with my 7th coat of Tung Oil and its looking great  :glasses9:
It has a nice sheen to it now and the depth is getting to just how I had hoped. I'm really not sure how many more coats I will really need before Waxing it?

My dog Penny Lane, was very interested in what I was doing today  :laughing7:

Coming on nicely  :icon_thumright:
Thats some nice looking lumber.
2nd pic looks like your dog is saying ..... WTF's going on here.  :icon_biggrin:

:o I can't believe the size of the control cavity on those basses .....
Good place to hide your stash  :laughing7:

No, the dog is wondering what it smells/tastes like, and whether it'll need to be marked <grin>

Thank you! Yeah, the control cavity is pretty huge...lol. I was gonna opt for a battery box when i was building it online but I figured there was and is plenty of room for a preamp, battery, car keys, stash, etc... :laughing7:

Luckily, Penny Lane doesn't seem to like the smell much...She has kept her distance from it  :occasion14:

Jesus, I love oil finish! :icon_thumright:

Me too...But my arm is getting tired  :tard:...I wish I knew how many coats should really be applied. Today I added the 8th coat and it looks great but not sure if it is enough protection before waxing?

Hummm can't remember how many people here used to do. I know Jack did like 40 on his L5S BK... You can ask to TroubledTreble and Marko! They also did it

Today I talked to the Luthier that is making my Gancalo Alves back control plate cover. He  basically told me to do a minimum of 14 thin coats. So it looks like I'll be at it for another week. I don't mind at all giving what the end result will be.. :cool01:
I didn't put a coat of Tung Oil on today, instead I drilled the holes for the the strap lock buttons...Totally overlooked that.

I should be getting my UPS Quantum notification for my neck any day now.
I have decided that I am going to re-shape the headstock a bit so to make it unique to me.:icon_biggrin: I really wish they had a couple more options for short/medium scale headstocks.  ???
I've spent a few weeks on tweaking mock ups and have decided to shape it like the bottom headstock. I need to make one more mock up with the Clover tuners on it to be absolutely sure....but I'm pretty sure  :icon_thumright:

Update: Today I finished the 15th coat of Tung Oil on the body. I'm done with the Tung Oil and am going to let it cure for a week then apply some Warwick wax and paint the cavities with the conductive shielding paint.  :icon_biggrin:

I am still waiting on my neck to ship...Going on 5 weeks now...Hopefully soon  :icon_thumright:

You can put 15 coats on in a little over two weeks? How thin were the coats?

I thought the thicker coats needed days/weeks of drying time?

Only the first two coats were a little thick. The rest of the coats were pretty thin. This Rockler Pure Tung Oil dries fairly fast. I had it hanging in my living room every day for a full 24 hours with an oscillating fan on it.  I only skipped one day of not applying Oil to it.
Seemed to to work out fine..  :icon_thumright:

I'm experimenting with Tung oil on some scrap wood, in preparation for the homemade body I'm going to finish soon.
I started with 4:1 for three coats, then I went to 2:1. I might move to 1:1 next. I tried a few coats of pure, and didn't like the thickness, and it took a while to dry. How thin did you like your oil?

I've got six coats on my control cavity cover, and the wood is starting to look good. :blob7:

Control cavity cover looks nice line6  :icon_thumright:
I only mixed the first coat with 50/50 Mineral spirits and Tung oil and the rest of the coats were Pure Tung. This Rockler Tung Oil was pretty thin...Mind you, I had to take the first bottle back to them cause when I opened it it was kinda milky looking, like air had got to it in the container. I took it back and the new bottle was super clear and thin.
I had to keep wiping the body for a couple hours after each coat cause the pores were bleeding. Last 2 coats of oil the pores didn't bleed.  :glasses9:

Update: I received my Goncalo Alves back plate on Saturday and a set of Goncalo Alves knobs today.  :icon_thumright:
I also got my UPS shipping notice for my Goncalo Alves neck and it is scheduled to be here on Wednesday.  I originally was going to use a set of Blk aluminum knobs that I have but the stacked bass/treble knob is to short. I found a guy on ebay that makes wooden knobs and he had these to me in a week.  :glasses9:

I'm still letting the BK body cure and should be ready to add wax to it in a few days...

Stay tuned... :occasion14:

Love it, im very temped to build my own short scale now.

I reckon there is a good chance the same guy made the Ebony knobs for my project. quite cheap too.
