Today was the start of my first Warmoth build  :icon_biggrin:

32" Black Korina Jazz Bass

Body:  2 piece Black Korina short scale Jazz
Neck:  32" Warhead Raw Goncalo Alves (should be here in a week or so)
Fretboard: Goncalo Alves (no inlays, side dots only)
Frets:  Stainless Steel 6105
Pickups: Nordstrand NJ4's
Preamp:  Aguilar OBP-2  (1x 9v)
Bridge:  Black Schaller 463
Tuners:  Black Hipshot Ultralight Clover's
Misc. Parts: Blk neckplate by Doug, Blk electrosocket side input jack, Blk Aluminum speed knobs, Blk bar string retainer, Blk Schaller strap locks.
Other additions:  Getting a quote from a Luthier about getting a Goncalo Alves back electronics cover. Just waiting to get the neck so I can shoot him pics of the color and grain to see if he can match as close as possible. :glasses10:

Today I applied my first coat on Tung Oil to the body. (Rockler pure Tung Oil mixed 50/50 w/ mineral spirits) I'm not going for a glossy look to it, so I will probably only add a couple more coats of pure Tung Oil to it over the next few days. Then I will finish it up with some Warwick Wax. I really liked the look and feel of my old 1989 Bubinga/Wenge Thumb Bass that I use to own and enjoyed using Warwick wax on it. Some people don't like the smell of the Warwick surface finisher wax but I always liked it :laughing7:

After: one coat of Tung Oil 50/50 mix  :glasses9:

Question about Tung Oil?
Does it help or matter if you use 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper to apply the second/third coat of Tung Oil?

I found this video on YT and was curious since there are very few videos on the application of Tung Oil..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqKzUGkiue0

Anyone tried that method?

Oh man that is AWESOME its gonna look fantastic! Black korina is just the best. Hands down.

Thank you!
I'm going to put my second coat of pure Tung Oil on the body this afternoon and I'm going to try that method of using 600grit wet/dry sandpaper to apply it with.
I'll post some more pics tonight  :guitaristgif:

Stay tuned...More to come  :cool01:

Update: I put the second coat of Tung Oil on it this afternoon  :icon_biggrin:
I saturated the 600grit wet/dry sandpaper really good and brushed on some oil to the body first and then went to town. Started on the back first to see how this method would work. It seems like it worked pretty well, felt like that oil was getting rubbed into the wood real good. So I did the front the same way. I don't see a big difference in color from the first to second coat. It just seems to have more depth.. I'm gonna let it cure for a few days and then probably give it one more coat with the wet/dry sandpaper and then on to the wax and shielding paint for the cavities to finish her up.

That body looks amazing!!  :rock-on:

Thanks for the comments  :glasses9:
Looks like I'll be putting a lot more coats of Tung Oil on the body just to make sure the pores get filled as much as possible..I can always dull down the final coat with steel wool if it gets to glossy. Gonna start the 3rd coat after work this afternoon  :laughing7:

You may want to consider getting some Scotch-brite finishing pads. They're a little more expensive, but they beat the hell out of steel wool and work just as well. I used to use steel wool for a lot of things, but the residue is no fun at all. Don't have that problem with these things. Plus, there's less injection hazard, where you end up with a tiny piece of super-fine steel poked into your skin that you can't see to remove, but aggravates you to no end.

Thanks for the info Cagey  :icon_biggrin:
I do have some of those senthetic steel wool 000 gray scotch brite looking pads.. Are those about as good as the Scotch Brite pads?

They're probably the same sort of thing made under license. A gray pad is supposed to be an intermediate grit (maybe 400 or so?) in the Scotch-brite world, so it may be a bit more aggressive than you want if you're trying to get a satin finish out of a gloss. But, that also depends on what you're cutting. Oil finishes are relatively soft, so you don't want to beat on them too much. Lacquer is a bit harder, and poly beats them all. So, go from there. The main advantage is the low residue and resistance to build-up.

Update: I've finished the fourth coat of Pure Tung Oil applied with the 600 girt wet/dry sandpaper today. Since thinking about it and realizing that I do need good protection, I am going to continue applying a thin coat of Tung Oil every day through the middle of next week with soft cloth before waxing. It is turning out really well...It is cool to see all the depth come out every day. There is a lot of stuff going on in this piece of wood, bits of flame, figure, knots, lines and color changes.  :icon_biggrin:
