Very cool! :icon_thumright:

Wish I could afford such a top. Amboyna is my favorite wood.

I bought the little piece in this picture yesterday. The other two I've been saving for a while.

I know small scale stuff isn't as fun as large pieces, but here is some Bloodwood Burl I came across and bought up. :blob7:

Also, some more Amboyna and other stuff.

Who doesn't love Walnut, Maple and Bubinga? Nobody! That's who.

That turned into this.

And of course, Claro Walnut is fun.

That's currently looking a bit like this.

Wow! That Claro Walnut top looks like a Ruffed Grouse
or a Pheasant!! Striking, bazaar, and very cool!

What the hell is that in that turquoise thing in the middle!!!??? WANT!

Teal dyed stabilized Box Elder Burl. The wood is basically impregnated with dyed acrylic under vacuum pressure. (Though all the others in that picture are natural, and unprocessed.)
The pen I turned with it belongs to a member here. :blob7:

Here is a set of stabilized dyed Masur Birch knife scales I've been meaning to carve up into a handle for a Damascus steel blade. Unfortunately, they only look this good under the light. They are quite dark in real life.

The teal dye is killer!

I got the Aboyna from Bow River Woods up in BC , they have very reasonable prices and are great to work with , fast and professional.

Wow! I've seen Amboyna tops sell online for as much as $1800, and here they've got them for $150 !?
I might have to buy one and make something with it. That's very affordable.

I got these sets from Northridge Hardwoods .. nice price and fast delivery

My Lady asked me what I  wanted for my Birthday .. I  said more Burl tops ... she laughed then asked for the link ... Love that woman!

I had a bad day yesterday and went to the shop and milled everything in sight - here's what I found.....

flame_maple_wbirdseye.jpg

This is a huge billet of 8/4 Mahogany about 7 ft long that I'm gonna make stuff from.....

I found this piece of Tigerwood at my local woodshop; cleaned myself up and bought it...
moretigerwood_lv.jpg

Paduck - this was a dull brown rough sawn board that turned into this...
paduck.jpg

Please help, because I think this is quartersawn cocobolo and if it is I'm going cry and dance a bit....

This was a piece I glued up and just loved - Morado is so pretty (a rosewood variety of some kind)

Ok - some explaining - I was at my Klingspor and lamented that I wanted to get some quilt maple but didn't see any around.  The dude working in the back piped up and said he had a piece he was hoarding that I could have.  I'm so glad - I think that these rival the piece I picked up from Warmoth

Cheers - but wipe your mouth please......

I've seen a lot of cocobolo, and that doesn't resemble any I've seen. I even have a nice quartersawn board. The color is off, ray fleck is too pronounced and grain lines too indistinct. Sorry.

See here: http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/cocobolo.htm

Maybe pau ferro? http://hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/rosewood,%20bolivian.htm

Yeah, I was confuzzled with that Cocobolo, as well. Doesn't look like Tigerwood and Lignum Vitae, either.
Very cool pieces, though.

Thanks for the replies everyone - these two I'm good on as the tags were clearly marked and if the wood buyer is that dumb, well, the world is worse than I feared...  The Mora/Tigerwood is an odd flatsawn that I saw and grabbed because of the oddness; the Vitae maybe a related species but it's dead in the common named woods that fall into the category - I cut the piece off shown and broke a bandsaw blade with bent teeth, broke teeth off my Shark saw and ended up getting a carbide bandsaw blade...  Almost used a damn hacksaw!  Crazy piece of wood...

I'll keep the search up on the faux coco perhaps; my dealer doesn't carry Pau and the other exotic woods that they carry (Wenge, Bubinga, Paduck, Leopardwood, purpleheart and shorts of other stuff...)  but he does carry coco and honestly I many be deluding myself cuz I want it to be... ;-)  :icon_jokercolor:

No need to be sorry - I'm a pragmatic chap!  There are some details that I did not mention.  The piece is 4.5 inches wide and that picture was taken in a macro style mode with a close flash - So maybe the flecking just came out of the camera stuffins.

I was using those hobbithouse photos as well and pidgeon holed it where I did because the grain could be plausibly in the WIDE range of crazy arse patterns that are shown in the hobbits coco porn collection.  Honestly I don't care beyond being able to properly ID the wood for when I sell the guitar that comes from it, and may be limited to saying "Exotic Rosewood" as a catch all...  (I'm lying like O.J. - of COURSE I want it to be qsCoco!)

I started splitting this into 2 tops as it is a 1" thick set .. man Claro Walnut is HARD      1 set will be for a bass the other for a chambered walnut LPS I'm building with a walnut/ebony neck

Now that's some Claro! :icon_thumright:

Yes, it can be difficult to work. I think it's worth the effort for the end result, however. It's a beautiful wood.

A little boring, but here's some 4/4 Padauk and Purpleheart that I was going to make a spicerack out of.

even average wood porn is still porn!  ;-)
Nice wood!  I've ofter wondered if Purpleheart would make a good fretboard....

I love purple heart,  the first guitar I built from scratch waas from it.

I agree with the "worth it"  that piece of Claro is amazing , having a matching bass/guitar will be well worth the effort.
