I don't remember if I posted about the body that I started almost a year and a half ago, but the baritone neck that I know I posted about recently is going on it. I started on it last March and as of December of '24, this is what it looks like:

Mahogany body, quilt maple veneer, white pearloid binding. The center line is a veneer strip that I put in place to hide a mishap with the quilt maple veneer halves. Green dye with black burst.

So this week I started on the neck. From a cut-off of the quilt maple veneer sheets, I applied a smaller piece onto the headstock and traced the template of the custom headstock shape I'd been working on that'll be a 2x4 config of tuners.

I used my handheld power jigsaw for the rough cut.

(those spots are old red dye, not blood)

And now the moment of no return. Do I make this a $400 mistake? Template is attached to the front face.

And sure enough, because of my daughter's separation anxiety, she's had to come down to the workshop every single time I'm downstairs. A fraction of a second of distraction and I got a bad tear out. :(

The impact broke off that one point, which, thankfully, I found. I also found a few slivers scattered around on the workbench and beyond, but there was no saving it. I had to walk away.

But later, I used Titebond to glue that missing point back on. Then I took it to my spindle sander to smooth out that divot. The final shape is off from the original design, but at least I didn't have to sacrifice a $400 neck.

Then I drilled & reamed the tuner holes.

A test fit with the tuners.
