Wild Quilt body in; change in plans?

It's not really THAT color, after you get finished with your salmon, any tips on getting the darker dye more uniform?

you can try to wet the wood with solvent before hand to swell the grain a bit - then dye with strong dye

let dry

wash back with a solvent soaked rag to get the light parts where ya want em

its a bit of an artistry thing on that last step - you might have to go back and add dye, wash back... etc

I just pulled from the memory banks you or someone else recommending a "pre-stain/pre-dye" application, anybody remember that, is that actuallu a solvent pre-wetting?

What for solvent in either case, wood wetting or washing back, naptha? Natural mineral spirits? Something else?

After studying I think the root cause is that the grain in the "quilt work" is a lot tighter in some places than others and the dye is more readily absorbed, MUCH different than working with flame maple... (My first quilt job...)

Salmon burst!  I wonder if there are any water slide fish decals.  :)

Seriously, sorry your having difficulties.  I'm sure you'll work it out.  All of your projects that I've seen have turned out beautiful!

It really isn"t salmon colored, it's a learning experience.... Maybe I should do a salmon colored one and sell it to Canadians, eh?

Have you decided on pickups?

Yeah, going to do cream mounting rings and either chrome or toasted nickel Rio Grandes; TX in the neck/mid and BBQ in bridge, LOVE those PUs in my recent VIP build...

jackthehack - can you elaborate more on the sound of the Rio Grande's, I.m looking for something to drop in an SG and was thinking TX/BBQ.

I really need to find a guitar with some Rio Grande pickups in it and play it.

Closest thing I can compare then to that you might be able to check out would be PRS Dragon II/Dragon IIIs, really hotter like the Dragon IIIs. Almost bought a set for the Black Korina VIP, but decided to try the TX/BBQ set based on the rave reviews from Gregg/others on the board, glad I did...

Check out their website, there are some great Samples!
I love the samples for the Bluesbar, muy Grande and the fat bastards!
and the punch/crunchbox sound great for Metal!  :headbang:

Going to start over on the stain/dye job this p.m./weekend; going to use a lighter brown color for the graining.

More info on the Woodburst transparent stains (have gotten a couple of PMs on this); they contain "petroleum distillates, tung oil and pigments"; they do have a pre-stain conditioner, go on with a rag and wash back with some paint thinner on a rag.

The color chart on their web page is very accurate, and the 2 oz bottles run US$5.50 and are enough to do at least one guitar, or 2-3 laminate tops; I'm so pleased I just ordered some more colors to play with.

CB - The AZO orange stain seems perfect to do the "Tony the Tiger" burst on flame maple you were threatening earlier.....

Here's my Azo Orange Strat! I applied lots of coats and even though you see much more of the grain in real life, I wish I had used something to enhance the grain...

Marko dude that is massive fretwire. Or at least, it looks that way to me, I prefer small frets. But either way, whoa.

Had my eye on the body for a while.  In fact, been looking on the showcase tonight and realised it had been sold.  Don't have the money right now (and the past few months) anyway.  Surely, this won't be your Gold Top Fenson (yeah, 'course not).  What was the comment on the showcase?  'Whoa, off the charts Quilt!'  And the Pau Ferro...  That's amazing too.  My suggestion world be P90s.  But you're also putting P90s into the Tele fenson, yeah?  Maybe choose the 'buckers for this, so you have something different.

hehe, I was in shock too when I received the neck... that will teach me to buy parts from inferior Warmoth competitors ;)
