Why R3 option for 10-16 compound neck???

The R4 is 10" radius, but the R3 is 12" , which makes for a bad mismatch in radius... And it's weird you can't choose Floyd nut on a 15" radius neck since they do have nuts for that radius...

But they offer floyd shelf for 9". 9.5", 10", 10.5" or 11"radius, which they have NONE nut made for any of those, except the obvious 10" ........ i dont get this!

And yeah I know you "can have" the wrong radius nut, but I'm super picky about having the action "exactly the same" (i dont measure it, i just feel it) over all strings at the first fret... I couldn't get a good action on a 12" with a 10" nut, so thats how picky i am  :icon_biggrin:

I may be misunderstanding your question, but as far as I know, the nut radius with a Floyd Rose system is set by the nut's slot reliefs, not its mounting shelf. The shelf cut for the nut mount itself is always flat, regardless of fretboard radius. So, you buy the appropriate nut for the radius you want to start with at the appropriate width, string height and spacing. Should be 10" for the standard Warmoth compound radius. That means you can use an R1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 as long as the width/height/spacing works for you and your neck.

I know the shelf is flat and the radius is on the nut :doh: (and please, don't start rambling about locking tuners in favor over locking nuts like you do in almost every floyd related thread... Not interested :icon_thumright: )

Why is there a R3 AND R4 option then? They have the same width and depth, the only difference is radius (of which one option doesn't even match the 10-16 radius, which is basically the big question of the thread, haha)

The buyer still have to select the locking nut of choice manually, so choosing R3 or R4 option in the neck builder is practically the same thing?

It seems like you're making this more complicated than it is.  If you want it to match your 10-16 neck, you get the R4.  If you want to match a 12" radius, you get the R3.

But warmoth doesn't even make floyd shelves for 12" radius  :doh:
They have R3 option but it's the wrong one for 10-16 compound  :dontknow:

Maybe the R3 had a 10" radius long time ago, and only a different width and string spacing than the R4, but nowadays it has an 12" radius , at least according to Floyd Rose themselves  :toothy12:

Well, I'm not really surprised you could choose a R4 (10" radius) nut for a 10-16" radius fretboard  :icon_tongue:

For the looks of that chart, it looks a bit old, they have updated the R3 since then

As regards the radius of the R3 has anyone taken a radius gauge to one to verify it one way or the other.

According to Schaller R3 is 10" radius. And they make them for FR in any case,

Perhaps that Floyd chart that states 12" simply has a typo.

I called Warmoth about it, and they were like, "don't worry about it, just go with the R3 you chose, all will be well."  And, I guess it is.  My first build is not COMPLETELY set up yet until Cagey gets his hands on it, but it looks and feels ok to me.  I also have another super-fine strat + neck coming with a FR, this time I grabbed the R4 nut.  So, we shall see.  I'm digging the R3 so far.  Warmoth seemed to imply that they were not interchangable, like if they cut your nut shelf for the R3, you can't put an R4 in there, and visa-versa.  I call BS on that, though.  What ya'll think?

R3 and R4 are both for 10” radius necks, the R3 just has a touch narrower string spacing.
The prep for the R3 and R4 (or really any Floyd nut for that matter) differ from nut to nut.
Swapping out even and R3 for R3 (or R4 for R4 for that matter) may require some modifications.

You are likely fine to stick with the R3 as I see no major issues moving forward.

Well that seems like things are done at random? Eh, I can't see why they would make different dimensions on R3 notes? That's like making OFR that sometimes comes with 75mm string spacing or tuners that has to be wind in reverse  :doh:

Correct.  The string spacing is what's different in the R3 and R4 nuts.  The width and depth dimensions, I wouldn't think would be different.  I haven't looked into it that deeply, especially since the R3 ended up working just fine on my build.  What will be interesting is that I have another build on order from Warmoth with an OFR and an R4 nut.  I also own a fairly nice micrometer.  So we shall see exactly what the difference(s) are if any in the nut dimensions, and the pre-cut nut shelf (shelves?).  Will report back if I can remember!  :glasses10:
