...I searched the filtertrons and most people on the web say they are low output humbuckers that share more similarity to a single coil than a humbucker, is this true?

Filtertrons are low output humbuckers, they have their own sound. I can speak about the pickup I have experience: TV Jones Classic Plus (bridge position): Extended highs but not harsh at all. Excellent cleans for a bridge humbucker, reminds me a sweeter tele bridge pickup. Actually it's my favorite bridge humbucker when it comes to cleans cause I usually don't like bridge humbuckers for clean sound. It's only the second model in output but if you go higher in the TVJ pickup list you are getting into pickups with PAF flavor which for me was useless, I have guitars with PAF style pickups.

Like I wrote earlier it takes gain very well. Filtertrons have a tighter sound than Gibson style HB's, this is good for high gain. With a clean amp ('66 Fender Bandmaster) and a pedal (Bogner red) I have played classic metal with this pickup with very good results. You will find lot's of clips for the TVJ Classic Plus on YT.

From the clips you posted I believe a tele (with the clasic tele pickup combination) will also get you there. Teles are versartile and can go from clean to scream.

I agree with Kostas on this one! I have a set of BK Pyle Drivers (Tele bridge and neck) wired with a 4-way switch and can't believe the range of tones I get.!  :guitarplayer2:
