Is there some kind of taboo on Low output pickups w/ a Floyd?

Someone should do a guitar (or a bass actually) with only 7 frets. Actually I'm surprised I couldn't find a pic just now because I figured surely some bass player had done it either as a joke (no money above the fifth fret) or in order to have one bass for fretted and fretless. You could play fretless solos higher up, and still play fretted root/fifth the rest of the night.

The hybrid fretted/fretless basses I've seen have partial frets with some strings being fretless rather than fretless above a certain fret. Maybe there would be action issues if it was fretless above a certain fret?

I thought back in the '50's Gibson did a Super 400 for some country star that only had 5 frets on it.  The rest of the neck was inlay (for his name 'natch).

I forget who that was now.... or if it's just an urban legend  :)

Uli is disappointed with all you fret haters.

I use low(er) output humbuckers in all of mine. I really like Dimarzio PAF 36ths in my favorite floyd guitar. i don’t play anything higher gain than 80’s hair metal though.

yo the floyd is all about tuning stability, dont feel weird putting low 'put (output) pick ups combined with it. it sure doesnt care! trust me, i was valet Victorian at summer camp.

That said, the Fred and Humbucker from hell, and a few others come to mind.

I've had this combination on a couple of guitars, as wells as variations of it with the PAF Pro, and they were stellar.  Especially back during the Fridge-Rack days.  The clarity cut through nicely with these.
