Warmoth VIP Body

I'm a fan of PRS guitars, but I'd like to be able to customize things more than is possible with an actual PRS. Enter Warmoth and the VIP.

However, a cursory look at VIPs online show that there are a few different shapes. I've read that there is an 'old' shape, which was much more similar to an actual PRS, and a 'new' VIP shape, which is tweaked so as to not anger PRS.

But even among the new VIPs, it's not obvious from the pics that I see how carved/curvy the body is. For example, when looking at the in-stock bodies for sale, it appears that the faces are very flat:

Is the face really that flat? In contrast, I've seen some that I assumed were new-style that appear to have more contour:

Are those actually old-style? Are there options that in-stock photos don't have? Or maybe the in-stock photos don't do the contours justice?

Your links 3, 4, and 5 are all the old style. You can immediately tell because of the recessed controls. That option is no longer available.


The new Carved Top is much harder to photograph. It is not as flat as it looks in links 1 and 2, but they are definitely different than the old style.

Ah, that's a much easier way to tell the difference!

Bit of a shame, IMO, as I think the old-style really looks quite lovely -- though the new ones are nice as well.

Actually there have been at least 3 types/shapes of VIPs.
1. - Original - even had the same v shaped rear control route
2. - New style - reshaped and with std rear control route with recessed knob controls if desired (before double lam was the only choice)
3. - Newest style - same reshape and std rear control route no recessed knob controls (due to only a double lam construction)

it is a 2 as I listed them. There is much more carve on the top than shows in the pic
