Warmoth Jaguar

I am going to be building a Warmoth Jaguar here soon, and was curious if anyone here had a warmoth jag? I can’t seem to find too many pictures on google of Warmoth jaguars, and I wanted to see yours if you guys and gals have any

Lovely build! I’m curious to see how people use jag pickups with the warmoth pickguard. I imagine I’ll have to make the single coil sized holes larger to accommodate traditional sized jag pickups

On a related note, why does the Warmoth Jaguar pickguard not come with Jaguar pickup cutouts? The options on the Jag pickguard page are humbucker, Strat and none. The Strat ones are too small, correct? It's odd because the Strat, Tele and Jazzmaster pickguards all come with options to route for the pickups traditionally associated with those models (plus many others).

Why the odd limitation on the Jaguar pickguard, requiring the customer to hand-tweak or buy a Jaguar pickup template from somewhere and create the right size.

Is there a legal reason (with Fender) for this? Or is it more of a production thing with Warmoth? Or is the Warmoth website simply not up-to-date on this particular option?

My jag pickguard should ship soon, and I can compare it to the pickguard on my fender jag. If the only difference is the pickup holes, I might just use that

I believe it's the other way around. The Jaguar pickups are a tiny bit smaller. So by using a Strat pickup route you should be able to use both Strat or Jaguar pickups in Warmoths pickguard.

I'm also thinking about making my next Warmoth build a Jaguar.
I went to a local store and tried a couple of Fender ones and they felt really nice. But I also tried one with a strap standing up and that was a real revelation. They feel really comfortable to play standing. As well as sitting down. And they sound great.

I don’t think traditional Jaguar pickups will fit without some modifications to the pickguard

I put one together a few years ago, and the best advise I could give would be to single-source the hardware, etc.

There are subtle differences in pickguaards, plates, tailpiece, bridge, etc. that will eat your life compensating for after the fact, and it's not worth it unless you just love routing/drilling work on a perfectly nice body.

Warmoth state: 'No routing offered for the original Jaguar® pickups.' on the Jaguar pickguard page, so there's no ambiguity there - Jag pickups need a bigger cut-out.

As to why not...?  :dontknow:

Hmm, I think you’re right. I was looking at differences between dimension specs for Strat and Jaguar pickups on Seymour Duncans site and those seem to be without the pickup cover.
Well, I’ll just use any Strat pickups and things will sort themselves out at least for me.
Hope things work out for you as well

Thanks Logrinn! Ain’t nothing a file and some patience can’t fix. I’m super excited nonetheless.

Yeah, me too. Can’t wait.
But while I wait I think I’ll head over to the suggestion box and suggest chambered Jaguar bodies. Unless it’s already suggested, then I’ll add my approval for such a suggestion.

My question is, what's the prime difference between Jag and Strat pickups, and could you possibly find Strat-sized pickups with those characteristics? There's so many out there, I imagine at least one oughtta be close.

Creamery pickups makes a lot of really nice pickups for Strat, Jaguar, Mustang and other guitars. Several of these are the same ones, but sized for the different routings. So there’s the Alt88, the P90’s, the Sonic 60’s and so on. Check them out. I got a Sonic 60 in the neck for my Mustang and it sounds amazing.

Those options/workarounds are fine, but it would be nice - and easier all around - if they simply offered a Jaguar pickup routing option on their Jaguar pickguard.

Curious why they don’t.  ???

The pic above clearly shows the filing/Dremel work needed to modify the Strat rout to fit a Jaguar pickup. Ain’t nobody got time for that!  :icon_tongue:

Might be a suggestion to throw their way, if it hasn't been already.

Until then, I'd call it an opportunity to experiment. Lots of strat-sized pickups out there, who knows what they could all sound like in a Jaguar configuration?

Ι don't see why someone should put strat pickups just because Warmoth doesn't offer routing. There are so many strat style guitars out there with strat pickups, the Jaguar is different and I would start with Jaguar pickups. I'm not sure if there's a lot (if any) difference in their construction but I like the look and it's associated with the guitar. For those who haven't played a Jaguar, the sound is different from the strat, I'm guessing a big factor is the small scale. I have heard Jaguars with vintage style pickups having so fat neck pickup sound I would have thought it was a Les Paul if I wasn't seeing the guitar in front of me.

Warmoth bodies (and modern construction necks) may look identical to Fender ones but they are not. Most people into offset guitars want vintage correct parts so they choose parts from other brands. The Jaguar has less fans than the Jazzmaster and no compatibility with long scale guitars so there's less variety out there. I searched for years to find parts I liked and I realized I had to order different parts from many different vendors, I had to pay way more shipping expenses than any other guitar I assembled in the past.
