Warmoth Jaguar

Before about ten years ago, I thought Jaguars were more popular than Jazzmasters. But I think what happened is Jaguar popularity remained constant and Jazzmaster popularity increased exponentially.

If I liked the Jaguar sound, I'd definitely try to get Jaguar pickups because they definitely do sound different than Strat pickups. I don't recall hearing them before but I always think SD antiquity pickups sound like whatever they're supposed to.

I also agree that the scale length is a factor, if I wanted it to sound like a Jaguar I'd get a shorter scale length. That also changes how the whole guitar feels. It's definitely a sound well suited for a clean fender amp with a moderate amount of reverb.

I’m definitely gonna enlarge the holes to accommodate the jag pickups, here’s what I’ll have to remove

I’m not looking for period correct contours or anything, so I’m not too worried

I would hold off until you dry-fit it to see whether the fingerboard will impinge on the upper edge of the pickup cutout as you've marked it out.

Am I right in presuming that you only need to enlarge the holes in the pickguard if you have the cover on for the Jaguar pickup? And if you remove the cover from the Jag pickup, that pickup is actually a tiny bit smaller than the Strat pickup (hence the difference in sound)?

I will be using a jag neck from Warmoth, so there shouldn’t be any overhang.

I’d still like to use the cover on the pickups, I want them to look traditional. Not a bad idea though

I don't own a Jaguar, and haven't actually touched one in years, but AFIK, Jag pups look the same as Strat pups because of the exposed mounting surfaces. Jag pups are wood mounted, like traditional JM pups, and you therefor see the screw mounts when installed. The actual profile of the coil portion of the pup is sort of squared off. If you're going traditional, are you going to use the shield "claws"? I don't know how they effect the rout, but from the mark up in your pick guard, it looks like you already took that into consideration.

Yes, I’m gonna include the claws. It wouldn’t be a jaguar if it didn’t have claws  :laughing7:

(Hopefully you took that as an animal joke and I didn’t come off as a jerk)
