Want to build an effects board

Through the years I have always been a bare bones basic player (guitar--->Cord--->Marshall) but I am wanting to have a bit more flexibility and want to put together a pedal board.  I have a Chorus and destortion pedal but want to add a few more (noise gate, delay, etc...).  Looking for some input from the folks that have boards set up, what are the essentials, etc...

Any input woud be great.

Wah pedal, dunlop crybaby.

Put it before the distortion for metal wah, after for nice clean wah. (or other way round :icon_scratch:)
I put it in my mates pedal board it was cool.

Really no such thing as "essential" pedals. What stuff do you play? What sounds are you looking for? What other players' tones do you like?
For myself, my gigging board consists of over a dozen analog as well as a digital multi fx. This gives me the sounds and flexibility I need to cover what's in our setlists. I have several pedals that might seem redundant, but they are set for different volume levels, more (or less) distortion, different effect levels...you get the idea.

I love a compressor for cleans.  I also like reverb, better if you have an effects loop.

+1 on the compressor,  I love my Dyna Comp.  Nice for clean sustain but also works well with distortion.  Also what kind of chorus, distortion, and Marshall amp do you have now?

But, the big question is what Illdar asked.  What are you after and what do you play?

I knew after I hit post that I should have been more specific...

I play alot of Classic Rock and Heavy Metal (ranging from Kiss, Aerosmith, Nugent to Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth) with some harder edge punk thrown in.

I have and older DOD Stero Chorus and the Dunlop Zakk Wylde distortion pedal.  My amp is a 1988 JCM 800 100 watt super lead split channel with reverb.  I also have a GNX4 workstation which I never really use.

Sounds like you've got the essentials... distortion, chorus, and reverb.  Other things worth considering are compression, wah, delay, and EQ.

I have an older GNX2 I used to use a lot.  The built in presets are mostly too much of everything but it has a lot of decent effects built in and can give you a idea of what each effect is good for.  Start with a blank preset and mess with them one at a time.  The only downside is you can't reposition the pedal chain very well (compressing a distorted signal is a different sound than distorting a compressed signal).

Id agree with RLW. doubly so if you ever play stuff like ZZ top, or some more bluesy kind of rock.
A good boost would be a good help.  and how you get that done has a million possibilities.

I'd definately invest in a good EQ though.
