Using Automotive Paint as a Solid colour finish?

Soooooo. I live in Australia and it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to get guitar paint shipped over here. So I did some research today and a couple of sites mentioned about Automotive paints, and the majority said stuff about Acrylic Lacquer, for solid colours. So I guess I was just wondering if this is a pretty valid option.

I'm asking here rather than googling more and visited the depths of forums because I trust you guys and I can't be bothered.

Another thing is about Primer and Clear coats and stuff and I have ABSOLUTELY no idea about this stuff. I won't be finishing anything for years so its not super important, just a curiosity right now, you know what I mean?  :icon_thumright:

I have used automotive paints several times.  Duplicolor is what is available in the USA.  When using them I have grain filled as necessary, used and automotive primer and them color.  I have not used automotive clear but I suspect it would be fine.  just spray wet sand and polish like any other finish...or on guitar or car.

I have always cleared with nitro because I have usually sprayed metal flake or some other tint on the base color finish.  I have had no chemical reactions and the guitars remain stable to years.

I was always curious what was actually in those cans but I guess it is compatible with nitro.

These were all automotive colors and nitro mixed:

silver and red automotive with flake and nitro

white automotive with flake and a purple burst

and perhaps the most famous of all automotive finishes!!!

Paint does not know what it's going on.... so there is no such thing as auto paint and guitar paint.

Yea - the original Fender custom colours from the '60s were all GM car paint.
Use the paint you've got! It will be fine.

I absolutely love this.  Two of my fave combos, stripes & flake.
