Tru-Oil on Mahogany Neck

Hi Folks,

Any issues with doing a tru-oil finish on a mahogany neck?  Just wondering if it will be too "breathable" and result in the neck being unstable.

If good, how many coats would you recommend, and should I consider using a grain-filler as well before starting the finish process?

Cheers.

The only thing you'll want to consider really is if you want a contrasting colored grain fill, ie; black, then sand back, then tru oil.
If that doesn't matter to you, then just get to wiping.

Thanks - good to know.  Contrasting color grain filler sounds kinda cool.  Got to think about that one!

One of the attributes of mahogany is that it is very stable, especially when compared to maple.

I'm not sure Mahogany is more stable than Maple, but it still requires a finish due to instability. Walnut is another one. Also, due to its very open grain, oil finishes are tougher to do as it can't be applied thin enough to cure in a reasonable length of time. It accumulates in the pores and stays gummy. The grain needs to be filled first.

You might want to consider using some Birchwood Casey Sealer and Filler, before the TruOil itself. Made for the job.
