Travel Electric (Warmoth)

This may be a little late, but I just looked at the mock-up with the gray image in the back. I'm not sure what "travel' uses you envision, but I spend a fair amount of time playing in chairs of various sorts and one area that can feel cramped is the distance behind the bridge. It's an obvious length-saver, but if you're playing in a chair with an arm on it and the bridge is crammed way down into the crack, your right hand is quite hampered. You might want to look at it, and if you can spare an inch or two at least think about something like a Jaguar or Jazzmaster shape where the lower bout is longer on the bottom side, or even some heavy metal "X" shape extension.
DUDE!! Instead of altering the entire instrument that so much obvious time, thought, and planning has gone into, how 'bout ya just don't play in a chair with arms on it?! Just sayin'...

That's really the way to go, and what I did. I started off with the idea of using a drummer's throne, but was surprised at what a decent one cost. Then I decided that while I could easily live without arms on the chair, I would probably eventually end up on my ass if there wasn't a back so I started looking at "task" chairs, similar to this...

That particular unit is only $50 at Office Max. Prices go up rapidly from there if you want more robust versions of the same thing from the likes of Steelcase, Hon, American Seating, etc.

I'm sure he just meant that when your traveling your options are often limited - lots of hotel rooms have just an easy chair with arms in them.  Fortunately most of my traveling doesn't involve hotels and I'm not much worried about it.

Got the notification today that my parts have shipped!!!!  :headbang:  Only 2 1/2 weeks after I placed the order!  Supposed to arrive here on Tuesday.  A couple of my pickups for this build are back ordered and I haven't been able to touch bases with the guy that I buy my custom wiring harnesses from yet.  Shouldn't be to long note though before I start posting updates.

Nice!  Congrats!  Mine also shipped less than 3 weeks after it was ordered, so they must be ramping up production big time.  Hopefully it's not because they're having a drought of orders.  :sad1:

I'm not sure if this is insane, brilliant or old fuddy-duddery, but two of my favorite chairs for playing are two old rocking chairs, with ample arms for sure. One of them especially is Godzilla strong, I think the guy started with 4X4"s... so when sitting in them I use a little pillow to boost the ass of guitars with bridge-bottom-skirting issues. Depending on the guitar, bass and chair, it can take all sort of different weird little sizes -
all to be found in the stuffed-animal bin of your local Salvation Army!  :hello2:

Any and every pillow you'll ever need is there, plus you add that little "OOMPH!" to your interior-decorating. As hep-cats know, it's all about the accessorizing....

The body and neck have arrived - just waiting for a couple pickups that are on back order and the wiring harness now.  I'll be getting to work on it but it's going to take a little while at 30 minutes a week or so.  Decided to go with the Jasper bloody basin inlays and I love em - they look better in person.  I'll post updates as progress is made.

That fretboard is really attractive. Body looks a bit square for my tastes, though...

So what are you planning to do with the bit of headstock you cut off?  It's way too pretty to go to waste. I'm having mine planed down to 3/8" to serve as a pickup cover & "ramp". You obviously couldn't do the same thing with yer pickup configuration, but do you have a final design for the headstock?

I might take the extra piece off yer hands if you don't have any other use for it.  :glasses10:

I have read a couple of internet authorities who, for all intensive porpoises, have declared that if weight and hardware are equal, telecasters will sound "chunkier"  than strats. So break out yer slide rules, calipers, and charts of the vibrational length of each musical note - there's research in them thar hills.

Having played with a fairly "wide" variety of musicians, I can certainly attest that telecaster players are chunkier...

It's the grits 'n' butter. Not to mention the sausage gravy and biscuits. Or the smashed browns smothered in butter 'n' onions. And 3 eggs. First thing in the morning, to boot.

Damn. Making myself hungry. Gonna have to make a proper lasagna. Maybe a cheesecake for dessert. Wash it down with some Molsons.

What came first, the Tele or the beer gut?

It definitely won't go to waste.  I'll either be doing something with it or I'll be giving it to my father in law who helps me out with stuff and he uses all sorts of exotic woods on different projects.  I'm about to ask him for some backing boards for my new corner of the room for my gear to put a bunch of wall hangers on to be able to hang up the whole collection.  I've been using a floor stand in addition to a couple wall hangers but we have a 5 month old husky puppy right now who likes to chew so everything's in the cases except for what's on the wall and I prefer to have them all out (otherwise they don't get played as much).

Bit of a setback.  Spent the last 2 days in the hospital with chest (and a lot of other) pain and weakness.  Good news is it wasn't a heart attack, bad news is they don't know what it is.  Seeing my specialist next week but it may be that the disease is moving into my lungs and heart.  Looks like I won't be getting much done on this project for a couple weeks now at least.  I'm sleeping about 23 out of 24 hours right now :(

If it wasn't for fingers and (XXXX)ers, bodies wouldn't hardly be worth toting around. Although biology is pretty much identical to magic, I am first in line for when they take volunteers to have our brains inserted into robots. Think of the accessories! A few extra arms & you can fire the drummer... I'll hold you a space, but in the meantime, keep your magic handy. You're not allergic to wood dust are you? :dontknow:

Well, had a rough few months - been in the hospital twice since the last time I posted on this.  Finally felt well enough to get some work done on it this weekend.  I took a bunch of pics but my SD card lost them for some reason so I went back and took a few.  Got the body cut out and the holes cut for the tuners.  I decided to countersink the tuners a bit to get the knobs a little closer to the back of the guitar.  I also spaced them out a bit more than I did in my prototype - I'm glad I did the prototype as it showed me where I needed to make some changes.

When I was routing the outside of the body a piece tore out - you'll see it in the pics as an unfinished chunk sticking out.  I glued that piece back in and I'm going to let the glue set for a week before I route it again.

Here are my templates.  I made the tele one from the SX furian above and then I cut out another tele template from that and modified that to make the new design.

Here's the body.  Still have some cleanup work to do on it (in addition to finishing the repair mentioned above).  I also still have the control cavity to route out and am going to bevel the heel.

and with a little photoshopping of an approximation of where the headstock will be cut off:

Ran out of steam at that point for this weekend but it sure feels good to finally be making some progress.
