Top 5 Favorite Guitarist

Billy F. Gibbons (The Reverend)
Chuck  Berry (The Originator)
Hubert  Sumlin (The Supreme Sideman)
Grant Green (None more Cooool)
Marc Ribot  (King of the Out of the Ordinary)

Jimmy Page for being himself?  :laughing3:
I had a lot of respect for him while I was coming into my own, but recently I've discovered that he's probably the most successful rip off artist in the history of electric guitar.
For those who aren't more familiar, you know all their classic hits? The most famous and well known / beloved of their catalogue? Yeah, ripped off. Led Zeppelin has been sued a disheartening number of times, and not surprisingly, always seem to settle out of court. Youtube it if you can't bear to take my word for it.
And honestly, I'm sorry to have dropped this on anybody.

ANYWAY, let's get to the list!

MY personal top 5 favorite guitarists ARE:

1. DANNY GATTON- master of any/all things tele; chicken + hybrid pickin', lapsteel emulation, banjo licks, slide, you name it, the man they called THE HUMBLER could play it better.
2. JOE PASS- inversions and comping and articulation like NOBODY'S business
3. JOHN MCLAUGHLIN- virtually invented jazz fusion, his use of konokol enables him to practically realize a different dimension of guitar prowess- TIMING
4. FRANK GAMBALE- talk about somebody being HIMSELF, the guy practically invented sweep picking when all else scoffed at it's inability to be used practically
5. ERIC JOHNSON- attention to detail and addiction to perfection are what set him apart for me, and who DOESN'T love his little "koto" technique?

I can't believe we have 3 pages of this and only one mention of Edward Van Halen. Shame on you!!!

Now, the original poster asked for 5 favorites and added "People you wish you could play/compose like or listen to all day" Sorry, that totally falls into 2 categories if you ask me. There are plenty I love listening to that I don't actually aspire to play like so, with that said....

Can listen to all day:
George Benson
Wes Montgomery
Django Reinhardt
Jimmy Page
Angus Young

Wish I could play like
Edward Van Halen
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Paul Gilbert
Slash
Nuno Bettencourt

Now, I'm sure I'll catch flack for putting Jimmy Page in my listening category but I'm sorry, he was amazing in the studio and has put some of rock's most timeless licks on vinyl, but on stage he's sloppy as all get out and kind of difficult to get into. Angus.......he could easily go on either list.

Even with the lists though my playing doesn't touch any of the names in either list so, in all fairness, I'd give my left nut to play like anyone up there.
MULLY
still ashamed of you guys for not giving Edward the respect he deserves.....probably his own damn fault though

Oh man, I totally blanked out on the one guy who was tied for my number one slot and I have no idea how I could've managed to miss it.

DJANGO, you're better than all those guys, but you're tied with DANNY GATTON on basis of sheer musicality.

I'd rewrite my list, but you all understand how sorry I am  :laughing7:

Well it changes A LOT but at the moment.

1. David Gilmour
2. Joe Bonamassa
3. Warren Haynes
4. Jimmy Herring
5. Duane Allman

Yeah, I would've at least given Vai notable mention. I am always impressed with his playing, but I am not especially fond of his showmanship tendencies. I mean, I was alright with him painting himself silver  :laughing11:, but the whole fan machine thing is a little much for me. I hear a lot of Vai defenders claim that everyone uses them but I've never once seen it anywhere else off the top of my head.

Joe Bonamassa is pretty good, too.

Ah yeah, of course it's phoney. You gotta give the guy a lot of credit, he did that stuff spot on. Amazing talent right there. I was in tears. The people clapping in the background is hilarious too.
