I'm getting close to the end of the body finish on the Tele for brother Vic.
Good god... that sparkle finish is unforgiving.
In case anyone wants to do one... its doable! Some thoughts:
MIX MIX MIX and then MIX (or shake shake shake etc)
Keep the nozzle orientation uniform in direction and angle, or the finish "flecks" will not be uniform.
Do the sides first... but thats true of most finishes.
Clear should be a little thicker than you might do with other finishes, because if you sand through, you're going to have to redo the sparkle, and start your clear again. Sparkle or metalflake or speck finish seems to be totally unforgiving on touch up. The specs just will not look uniform unless the whole surface is recoated.
Which means - you need to take care, and go by the book, and give yourself an extra bit of CYA in terms of clear over the finish.
Other than that.... the flakes show up EVERYPLACE on overspray. Places that I never dreamed got any dust, have flakes on them. Easily cleaned, just wipe with a cloth, maybe a wet cloth if stubborn.
Makes me think - RESPIRATOR is a MUST DO on any flake type finish. What you thought you might have gotten away with on clear or colors... flake is right there in yer lungs if you dont wear the mask. One look at the filters on my respirator tells me - HOLY CRAP that coulda been my lungs!~

I'll have this finish done in a week at most - maybe by the end of this weekend if the weather holds out.
Ciao!~
