Solid Black Korina on Black Korina?

Hi,

I have ordered a Black Korina jazzmaster body in a brown to clear burst. I am now worrying that I have forgotten to order a korina laminate top, and now the body wont have any nice figuring on it

Is is common practice to order a korina top if you want the figuring?

Many Thanks!

It depends on what you mean by "figuring". If you're looking for some curl, you'd probably have to order a "Unique Choice" top. But, generally speaking, Korina looks good no matter what. Also, the curl you can get on Korina is pretty subtle. It's not like curly Maple, where you can really make it pop.

This is a curly Black Korina top on a VIP I did a few years ago...

You'll likely get a one piece body with random black figuring.  If you wanted a bookmatched top (two-piece mirror image) or some of that fantastic copper streaking found in some BK pieces, you would need to have ordered a unique choice.  That's not to say you're going to get a boring piece of wood, Warmoth has been very good to me when I've ordered pieces sight unseen.

I would think that a body with the same laminate top wood and core wood would not look very good. Unless there is a noticeable difference in color, it will either look like the body was pieced together from scraps, or that a solid piece of wood was not affordable. That's just my opinion, however.

It probably depends on how you buy it. The VIP a couple posts back is a chambered one-piece back and a one-piece front both, so there's no looking like scraps on that one. Plus, since the top is separate, the end grain took stain a little more heavily and it almost looks bound as a result. I got the thing third-hand, so I don't know what it cost originally, but I suspect it wasn't an inexpensive part.

Link?

It can certainly be pulled off, but given a body that is at the mercy of "the luck of the draw" from the lumber stack, I would be cautious. A single piece of BK (Well, a two or three piece body with no top.) is likely to ooze class, in any case.

I have a one-piece black korina WGD.  It looks killer.  But man, it weighs a freakin' TON!  This is one wood type where chambering makes an awesome difference (but no chambering available on the WGD).

Wouldn't be a problem with a burst finish

Is clear-to-brown a solid color on the edges?

Thanks for the input guys

I've now amended my order to include a laminate top and will see what comes to me

These below are what inspired me to go for Korina on Korina Brown - Clear burst, I think they all look stunning, none of them suggest cobbled together from scraps to me
