Question of the week March 15, 2010

its a shame that that body is finished because a good dye job would look sexy as hell on that top  :sad1:

Yeah, I was thinking a nice cherry, honey, or tobacco burst would look hot on this one. The natural looks just as nice though and wouldn't look so plain once you have all the parts on it. I would definitely NOT put a pick guard on this one though.

I guess I'm just too used to looking at book matched tops though. It seems strange to me not having that line down the center and the lines being negatives of each other. Still a gorgeous guitar though and I'm still thinking about it.

Only problem is them posting all those pics of the spalt tops waiting to come out. I've been wanting something spalted for quite a while now.

Man o man is that a nice top. I'd take 1 piece over book matched any day.

I was just about to order my next Warmoth this week with a book matched top, but after seeing this one, I'm going to harass Spike to find me a nice 1 piece.

I like them either way, but not in the natural bland maple colour.  It screams for a dye or burst.

Whoa, Mully... you neglected to mention that this beast also has a one piece mahogany back.  Someone please buy this so we can all see the finished product!

:o

also could someone tell me what is up with the bomb-a!! mahogany that warmoth manages to score?  it's so incredibly gorgeous and nothing like the mahogany on, say, my guild steel string...

I agree that this is an amazing one piece, but I kind of like the natural finish on it. Looks subtle, clean, and classy, the dark mahogany contrasts nicely with the flame front. Would look nice with cream and chrome hardware

Seriously, I would just do chrome hardware and wooden knobs with cream pup rings.  I don't think you could get away with anything else.  I think the neck would have to be fairly simple too, like all Indian Rosewood or something.

So I'm looking through the Warmoth Showcase and I come across this stunning beauty....

I must say that my jaw dropped and I seriously started thinking about maybe grabbing it. Then, after the excitement of such a beautiful guitar had settled a little, I noticed that it's a one piece top. That ruined it for me. I would prefer that it be book matched and have the line running down the center.

So, the question is this.

Would you prefer a 1 piece top like this or one that is book matched? Also, what would the advantage be of having a one piece top? Would it have any effect on the tonal properties of the instrument? And vice versa.

Thinking I could probably win another GOTM with this baby :headbang1:
I really don't think a one piece 1/8th inch top is going to make any tonal difference on a solid body. Now on a hollow body it's possible, after all acoustic builders use certain woods for the tops of them. So more or less I'd say it's just for aesthetics...

+1 on the all rosewood neck, or mahogany/rosewood

Rosewood pickup rings.

i love bookmatched tops. i've been looking at that LP body since the sale (maybe before?) and love the look. if it were bookmatched though i think it would be gone by now. just my thought on it. the natural look of the thing stuns me way more than the fact that anything is one piece. it it were a 2 piece top it would be perfect in my opinion.

Well, I guess I could buy it and then take a black magic marker and straight edge and draw a line down the center of it.

I think I actually like the one piece top better. It's a bit more unique than the bookmatched.... :dontknow:

cut it in half, stagger the two pieces, then glue it back together, reroute it the edges, and have a mini LP ;)

I like your thinking.

Book matched is great to get good flame coverage on a top. BUT, I would take that one piece any day, the flame is very uniform and that is rare.  :icon_thumright:

I like the one piece for the same reason - its uniform and IMO looks better.

i like symmetry in a flame top but if the body was less symmetrical like a strat or jazzmaster it might be cool, the problem is that the flame patern is not strait or horizontal, maybe it is just cuzz of what im used to but i like the flame bookmatched and to be angled downward from the center out just slightly. i would love a one piece quilt though.

the problem with bookmatched carved tops though is that it doesn't always line up all the way through once the contours are done. i still love them but i appreciate a bookmatch on a tele or flat top les paul even more, but in the case that the carve top lines up all the way down it is hard to beat.
