Q tuner pickups, or should I stick with the 'familiar' stuff?

I've got a set of motherbuckers for one guitar I'm going to build, but I seriously need a second set for a second guitar which is coming my way. which option would you guys do?

1: another set of Motherbuckers, but now the 'cool' version, cause they have more bite and grind, and a bit less output.
2: sticking with my own design, tweaked a bit with different wire (tonefordays)
3: a whole new design by Jon: neodymium magnets (yeah, he's got a couple of those!) with a nice coilwind.
4: set of q-tuners.

this is in accending order of price. the 3 MB's are 150 euro's, 3 qtuners are for me in total 300 euro's. I 'need' 3 qtuners, not 2, cause 2 qtuners + 1 regular looks weird, and I don't want to use the black or white epoxy: I find that fugly  :laughing7:

I've been wanting those pickups for ages, and I keep on hearing only great reviews about them, but the price is so damn steep...on one hand, I seriously want them, but on the other I keep thinking: 300 euros! Motherbuckers are very, very good, (much more versatile), and MUCH cheaper than the q-tuners. The thing with those qtuners is that I read that they're so super-hifi, but when I listen to them online, I'm not to psyched about them; they're cool, but not SUPERhuge!

I've been thinking of having 3 singlecoil sized qtuners with a regular s.c. humbucker, like the hotrail, but thats ridiculous and too expensive in the long run!

the 30 day return guarrantee doesn't satisfy me alot, I have to admit.

Yet... they do have a 'groovy' look to them, but in a walnut guitar, it might look just a bit off, where 3 regular motherbuckers with gold covers will look much more 'normal'.

input?

I'd love to try some QTuners, but they're kinda pricey.  Someday.  They are on my list of things I'd love to try out.

yeah, I slept a night over it, and I think I'll just play it safe with MB's. good thing that they're so cheap AND that I dig the tone MAJORLY cause I need money to pay other stuff :P

Whoa - 8-way wiring for £60.........  :sign13:
One cool MB might just be going in my explorer, with about a gazillion switches.... :icon_jokercolor:

Apparantly not so safe, cause I'm thinking about them again after this email:

The impedance is being measured at 1 and 10 KHz. We use 43 AWG bonding wire
custom made in Switzerland and medium grade neodymium. Just Google for
"neodymium properties" and study the values for remanence, coercivity, maximum
BH product, magnetic flux density and magnetic field strength.

for the tone/pickup gurus around: that translates, combined with that magnet, in a high output pickup, as hot as the emg60 for the mediumz and the emg 81 for the superhigh z. Bass: 6. Mid: 7.3. High: 8. Due to the 90 degree flip of the coils, and cause they're free floating, you get a scilent pickup, clear, defined tone, which is highly customisable with the polepieces. They are of a more efficient design than regular polepieces.

Tonewise, theyre like a superhot duncan custom, even hotter and transparant and tight than my own design.

I'm doing it. People said that the bill lawrencr l500 was very hifi, I dont agree. Idont mind them being more hifi. If the qtuners deliver the more hifi tone, coupled with more output, definition, articulation and adjustmentposibilities, whats there to stop me from trying? If they suck, I'll send them back and ask for a refund.

@djf67: 8 way? No, much more!

Left rail series
left rail parallel
left rail right coil
left rail left coil

same for the right rail.

Left+right series
left+right parallel

so ten in total! Not counting phase reversal crap, haha.

My goof up. I meant 8 conductor. Hence the 'gazillion switches'.
Have to say I'm tempted by the Q-tuner just 'cos it would look good on my lam of padauk/maple/purpleheart. Going with a sustainer neck and I'm planning to ignore the sustainer 'pickup' option and use it as a one pickup guitar that happens to also have a sustainer, so I want a versatile bridge pu. Get one quick and post a review!

The q-tuners are so wierd...and expensive.
I admit after some time...I'd try 'em out at least...just to see what the hub bub is all about.

Like you said, worst case scenario, you don't like 'em, just return them.

Just pulled the trigger, my order is finalised. One super high z, one high z, one medium z, all clear casings and black coils, to make it look a bit more normal. The red wire was too much I suppose. Waiting time: 3 to 4 weeks.

:cool01:

I think you'll be the first here to own them.
Let us know a detailed review.

2 weeks later, and my pickups have arrived! The guy quoted me for 4 weeks, so its really thrilling to have them right here right now! The warmoth LP's aren't here...yet! But will be within a week. So, people, lets keep the fingers crossed.

I think the red ones are odd looking, but not terrible.  I think the grayish looking ones would look great on a black dye/flame maple top combo.  I'm super excited about hearing a review of one of these!

the red ones are unique-looking, to say the least. I choose for black wire, not red. that makes them a whole lot more 'normal' yet a bit special. I also got some triple shots, which will be used with motherbuckers...

all I need now are the warmoth parts! (and some hardware stuff, cause, really, I can't do shit without them :D )

And what body are you putting these in?

Obviously something that's either a stunning exotic top or a Maple topped thing with an exquisite dye.  :laughing7:
