Lyric

Uncanny woman
You weaved your spell on me
I was taken by the look in your eyes
For all the wrong reasons
You must have been a spiteful child
Full of anger
Raised by the hand of a duchess, a mother and a heathen
You laid your tender trap of crystals and wine
Your neck was sweetly laced with a scent I did not mind
I can't lie
I can't lie
I can't lie
Angel don't cry
Angel don't cry
Queen of darkness
You got your way with me
You caressed ev'ry part of me soul
You got what you were after
A savage and an angel
You innocently hunger for love
Still shivering…

Sometimes you just gotta listen to some stupid, objectifying bonehead rock'n'roll.

Didn't even Paul D'anno think that song was terrible?

Still,  :headbanging:

The thing about Johnny Hiland is that he is playing some seriously challenging stuff at top speed, and his articulation and time are IMPECCABLE.  But sure, we know the boy can play - but he looks like he's not even TRYING.  Torrents of mindblowing guitar-playing flow forth while he just kinda smiles and winks at his bandmates.

Hold on to your hats, boys and girls.

I haven't seen anybody that good in a long time. Never heard of him before. Pisses me off.

Johnny Hiland is a first-call Nashville session player, for reasons that are evident if you watch any 15 second segment of that video.  He's legally blind due to nystagmus but he can obviously play like a son of a gun, and everything I've seen suggests he's also a very sweet guy.  Makes a lot of clinic, video lesson, and gear-endorsement appearances as well, but as you can see he's not exactly early-period George Strait handsome and his singing voice is more of a nasal hillbilly twang than a modern country tenor.  So he's pretty much gonna be a sideman or a musican's musician, a la Redd Volckaert.

But that effortless-seeming technique bespeaks a monomaniacal dedication to mastery.  Holy guacamole, that guy's good.

When you see somebody play that deliberately, you know they're learning to play it slowly and accurately, practicing that way for a while, then adding 1 or 2 bpm to the metronome. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Anytime you're making mistakes playing, you're not only playing too fast, you're teaching yourself to make mistakes. Then it becomes a habit that won't break because you're practicing doing it wrong, and that becomes the norm.

At least, that's what I've been taught by a guy who could almost do no wrong. Of course, you'd never know it to hear me play  :laughing7:

Thanks to that Van Houten thread, I now have some of the more obscure lyrics of this stuck in my head;
