The channels are unistrut.  They're quite common in the commercial and industrial construction industry.  If you've never seen the stuff, it's the equivalent of adult legos, complete with every imaginable piece of hardware and accessory.  You can build anything with it and out of it.  I've bolted them to the deck of the drill press, and they aren't so much acting as a guide as they are a true surface perpendicular to the drill bit.  The neck shelf is flush with them.

I thought so, too. Such a simple concept, and yet so many of us never thought of it.  :doh:

Yes sometimes the greatest things are so simple you can miss it.

Unistrut. Ok, I'm not that up on metals but I'll check that out.  I thought that it was going to be for getting a true surface. Great idea.
