P/MM Bass

Personally, I think the black pearl would look awesome.  The blue shell is kinda cool too, but the colors might not mix well.

It's still a work in progress and not finished.  I'll post in the P-Bass thread when it's finished sometime next week.  I don't have the neckplate yet or strings to put on it yet.  I have another neckplate I could use, but everytime the screws get run in out of the neck, that's one less time it can be done before drilling and doweling has to be done.  Thanks for the interest.

I haven't got a lot of feedback so far.  I'm assuming it's because of the red pearl pickguard and "if you can't say anything nice" mindset.  I'm not crazy about the red.  [...]  I'm going for loud contrast.

Initially I wasn't fond of it, but it's grown on me a bit - I do think parchment or some kind of impure :evil4: white would give it a more 'instant classic' look, though.

I've contemplated a P/MM configuration for a while, so I'm very curious to hear how you like that setup.  I think your volume/tone pot mounting bracket is a brilliant bit of engineering.

The pickguard thing, believe me when I say I've considered every possibility.  I think the red is growing on me too, and I hate red.

Pickup wise.  I'm hoping it'll sound good.  I don't think they will sound good together, probably a one or the other type thing.  The P-bass pickup, an SD quarter pounder in an alder bodied, maple necked bass, no surprises there.  The MM pickup is closer to the bridge than on an EBMM Stingray, and it's full passive with none of that famous preamp.  That being said, we all know the distinctive sound of those basses.  I don't see how it couldn't have a lot of that.  We shall see.

Body is finished!  Got it all wired and ran an electric razor over the pickups through an amp to check each volume, master tone, and series/parallel push pull.

An electric razor? Gotta give you ingenuity points for that one. I normally use a tuning fork. Keeps me from grinding my teeth into dust. Plus, they don't cost jack, don't require power and don't drop old hair and dead skin cells on my finish.

And I'm sure you're right about people keeping their mouth shut when they encounter a hideous an unusual color/design combination. There's no accounting for taste. You don't look at a guy's wife and say "Yikes!" At least, not within earshot. One man's nightmare dream doesn't necessarily coincide with another's.

I know I'm about to unveil a black Korina body that I didn't put an oil or clear finish on, and I expect to get some guff for that.

I wouldn't worry too much about not getting much feedback. I never do either - the ones that get all the comments are the ones with an attractive bit of wood on show.

Strangely, though, we're awfully comfortable sharing our lust on here when that applies...

Not so strange. Everybody likes to have their tummy rubbed. The ego eats that that up with a spoon. But, there's quid pro quo. If I build a snot-covered flea-bitten hairy beast, I wanna hear that I did a Good Thing, or keep your filthy mouth shut <grin>

Ha!  Well, if you've ever seen me, the electric razor doesn't get much use.  Electric razor, cell phone, remote control, most anything will be "picked up" by a pickup.  I've strummed other guitars and held them up to it before.  I'm not too picky, I'm just seeing if the darn thing works.

I actually got the idea from EVH when he had the pick mounted to a cordless drill and the pickups picked up the drill motor.  I used to have a cell phone that numbers were spoken when you punched them in.  For cheap laughs at the dive bar gigs, I'd hold it over the pickups and count off a song.  "1-2-1-2-3-4."

Yeah, a lot of things emit EMI that pickups just love to listen to and pass along.

I remember as a kid there was no such thing as cable TV and we were poor so we had a tube-based black & white hand-me-down garbage TV on top of that. When my dad would shave, or mom was using an electric kitchen appliance like the blender or mixer, the TV would go bonkers. Screen full of static, and sound went to hell. You wanted to scream at them to quit it so you didn't miss "Lost in Space" or "The Munsters", but that wasn't allowed unless you wanted a beating for being sassy. Good times.

Here is the result of my neck sanding.  Earlier in the thread, I mentioned the binding on the fretboard overhang touched the pickguard before the neck was tightened all the way down.  I looked at my other pickguarded basses for comparison and compared the gaps between the body and overhang.

The finished gap.

It is finished, but this whole thread was done with my cell phone camera.  Playing with the white balance and type of lighting, I can't sucessfully reproduce what the color looks like in person.  Once I find the actual camera, I'll post some finished pics in the P-Bass section.

Very tidy, and a little wrong, but in a good/intentional way.  :icon_thumright:  Some great handy-work, too: thanks for sharing the progress!  :occasion14:

Looks great  :hello2:

Clean and mean !!
Great all round job  :icon_thumright:
I personally like the red pickguard, great choices all over.

Didn't know Doug was doing them in brass, gee I might get a better tone, using one of them  :laughing7:

What ya mean ya need a camera  :kewlpics:
