Just reading this thread now....

Jesus H Christ!

Looking really good!  :)

me too. man this thing looks great! i think if i were building my own i'd do something weird like go with a maple fretboard. i've seen a few acoustics with them and it's always really cool. great looking guitar!

PS: my first acoustic had a double inlay at the 7th. i loved it, but a friend of mine borrowed my guitar once and said it was really distracting.

Update.. Just got back from a weekend at the Heritage factory. The stewmac box was waiting for me at the door, everything I need to get the binding done. The only catch they sent the wrong color binding... I guess I'll be waiting on that.
I did however get the fret supplies I need, I can get started cutting and setting them tomorrow.
On a good note my friend Kate who works at Heritage made me a guitar..

Should be back building tomorrow.

Nice fiddle!

How are the folks at Heritage, anyway? Y'know, I lived in Kazoo for 3 years and never made it over there. Silly me. I did have one of their guitars years back. They do fantastic work.

The Heritage folks are all super nice, I can't say a bad word about any of them. I will look you up next year and if you want and you can come with.

That would be great. Haven't been to the west side since I moved back here 11 years ago.

Well I got some work done today after all, drilled and set the abalone side markers. and then cut and set the frets... one problem they only gave me enough fret wire for 19 frets not 20.. Hmmmm... what to do with the last slot?

here we go

These frets looks SO small

They are super small, it's a vintage martin thing...thats the old style.
. I can always put jumbo's in later if I don't like them.

well the lost fret issue will be dealt-with at a later date, got to keep on a rolling.
now that the board is fretted down to the 14th it's time to attach the board to the neck. First step is to mask the board and the neck from squirt out. Did this with blue painters tape. Next, as per the instruction that came with the truss rod, the channel was filled with glue and the truss rod fitted. Then the neck was glued and ready for the board. Traditionally this would all now be set in a caul and clamped. However I do not have nor care to make a neck caul, nor do I have the correct clamps sooooooooo.. I did some research and found that the neck can be strapped or wrapped to produce the pressure needed to set the board. My next step wrapping the neck as tight as I could with black electricians tape, I used the whole roll.
Then the hard part, waiting 16 hours to see if it worked.. Well I unwrapped her this morning and BAM! worked like a charm.. next step is to drop fill the slots under the fret ends then I can shape the neck..
More later..

Well it was bound to happen! Had my first set back.. minor but still.. I drilled out the tuner holes... sharp forstner bit but still had some tear out on the back. The tuners will cover it but I still wish it had not happened. I will fill them and should be no big deal... But I'll know

In a situation like that, you can drill a small pilot hole which can be used to center the Forstner. That way you can drill from both sides and avoid the tearout. But, that's not going to be a problem here. As you say, the tuners are going to cover the exit wounds.

That was incredibly stressful!! But I got it all routed for the binding. I ended up making some mistakes but they can all be fixed with files so the binding should look great.
Glad thats over..
