Micawber - Replica

Hi, I'm starting to build my material list to build a Micawber inspired Telecaster. Although I will be using some modern components like a modern neck, I plan to keep much of Micawber's looks and feel. But I am having trouble trying to decide between a satin or gloss for body and neck, and if a vintage finish neck or not. Any ideas how Micawber is really like ? Can't get a clear idea in available pictures, probably because Micawber is very worn out already. Thanks.

I would find it unlikely unless you work for the Fender Custom Shop and have Keith and Micawber around to measure and analyze you can make a replica.

It is basically a worn butterscotch blonde blackguard Tele.

I would humbly suggest to just build an inspired by Micawber and call it Copperfield.

For those wondering who is Keith and what the hell is Micawber etc...

Bonus points if anyone guesses the other Dickens character not named but referenced in this thread.

Years ago, I had a cheap (Lotus?) Tele copy. The band I was in at the time did about 6-8 Stones songs in that G-tuning ("Brown Sugar", "Honky Tonk Women", etc.). I made that guitar my "Keithcaster" for use on those particular songs...pulled off the low E string, tuned the rest G D G B D and voila...instant Stones! You can certainly fake those riffs in standard tuning - we all have - but nothing sounds like having that low fifth string root on those chords/barres up and down the neck (and having the low E out of the way so you can flail away as needed). That guitar served that sole purpose for a few years and I loved when it came time to play those songs!

If I ever found myself in such a situation again, I'd definitely go that route (a secondary Stones-only, 5-string/open-G Tele)...just makes playing those songs so much easier (and it sounds so much better/more accurate).

Probably just use the same specs as this:
http://www.fendercustomshop.com/guitars/telecaster/2018-limited-51-telecaster-hs-relic-mapled-fingerboard-aged-nocaster-blonde/

The finish would have been gloss nitro. MJT is a company that paints nitro finishes and you could probably send them a warmoth body and neck and tell them what you want it to look like. I'm sure there's a bunch of other people doing the same thing.

Indeed. I've had them here. If you like that sort of thing, apparently they're the ones to have do it.

Thanks ! Do you think that Warmoth available finishes could do the job ? I was thinking a gloss finish for a butterscotch blonde body and a vintage tint gloss for the neck.

If you're just after a guitar with similar features in a similar color, Warmoth's paint shop is top-shelf.  If you want it relic'd, nope, Warmoth's not the right tool for the job.  Nitrocellulose  wears and takes a relic job very well, but the polyurethane coatings Warmoth uses do not.  You'll want to look for someone whose forte is relic'ing.

MJT Guitars comes to mind as a well-regarded vendor:  http://www.mjtagedfinishes.com/

Best of luck

Warmoth's finish will be excellent if you want it to look perfect and new forever. If you want it to look more like Keith's guitar, you'll want something nitro. They're both good options, just depends on what you want and how much you want to spend.

Non sequitur and an old thread. Robot or person?

So was this thing ever made or just an AI troll? 😂 My brother in law is looking for a Micawber inspired build. It’ll be shiny and new of course. Any help or details on what he would need for the build.

Here’s what I found.
  • Neck: Birdseye maple neck with a 12" radius, 22 frets, and medium-high fret wire
Body: Poplar tonewood body with a vintage crème finish
  • Bridge: Brass bridge
  • Pickups: A '50s Gibson PAF humbucker in the neck position.
Thanks! 🙏
