How???

All right, I've stayed out of this one so far, but this really pissed me off:

And it seems like all the people who try to tell me that crap drive beamers and have cushy jobs with benefits, and bought their houses back when prices were sane because they lucked out and got established before everything went to hell.

Um okay... but you teach part-time art classes.  What the hell do you expect?  Those of us who work our asses off 45+ hours a week for a good salary and benefits do not have "cushy" jobs.  They're called "actual" jobs.  I graduated college less than 2 years ago at the height of the housing bubble, so I moved to Wisconsin where apartments are cheap.  And I drive a 12-year old Honda Civic.  No luck involved.

I understand that SoCal is obscenely expensive, but you can live anywhere you want, you know.  No passport required to move to Arizona or Nevada.  Yeah, I know the weather is great and the streets are paved with marijuana... that's why the property values are so high.  Choices, you know?

I'm younger than you and at the risk of sounding like a cranky old dude... get a real job and move the hell out of your parents house.  It's absurd for a married woman (or man) to be living with her folks.

I'm trained in theater.  My future husband in trained in theater.  Theater is in LA, New York, or a couple other regional areas (which can be really hard to get a job in, or are just horrible places to live in general, like Vegas).  Up until recently I was putting myself through college and there was no way I was going to be able to make enough to move out. I'm not married yet, we are getting an apartment together right now that we will live in.

I might also add that I have been the person in my family who runs the house, feeds everyone, and takes care of the elderly grandparents for years.  I'm not freeloading off of my family, I have worked my ass off my entire life to live here.

My fiance and I are leaving the state as soon as we can find jobs in regional theater somewhere else, but the job market kind of blows right now, so we might not be able to do that for a while.

The part time art classes are only ONE of my jobs.  I also a housekeeper and I work at a comic book store.  Before that I was a janitor, a scenic carpenter (I worked 6 days a week at that job), and I was a picture framer.  I've had a job since I was 15.  I paid for all my own clothes starting at 15, I've always paid my own cell phone bills, I bought all my own food for several years, and my family didn't contribute anything to my college fund.

Maybe you should actually read my threads before you shoot your mouth off.

Oh yeah, and you obviously have never taught high school if you think it's a "cushy" job.  I have shit loads of work that I have to take home with me that I don't get paid for.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I also paint commissions for people, which used to be a 40 hour per week job.  I started my own business at 20.  I made most of my college money from that.  Business sucks right now though, which is why I have the other 3 jobs.
