Hipshot staggered tuners don’t fit Warmoth Strat neck??? Pics!

Hipshot makes closed gear tuners and open gear ones. Maybe the plates are different and you might have the wrong plates with your tuners.

Here's a picture of the open gear tuners. Tabs on both sides. It looks like you did get the wrong plates.

oooo - yes.  The man speaks the truth.

Every time I get on this forum I learn something new...

Ok, now we're starting to solve the mystery. I spoke to the seller on Reverb and he asked if there were "notches" under the tuner housing for the tabs to locate themselves. I hadn't noticed them before but upon close inspection there they were! The problem all along is that the tabs on the UMP are not open wide enough to allow the tuner to sit flush against the UMP. It's a simple fix obviously by widening out the tab so that is has more "flair" (15 pieces of flair, did you say? LOL). But, had he not pointed out that notch I would never have looked that closely underneath the tuner housing. Live and learn.

Well, then. I got curious and opened the box of new Hipshot closed staggered griplock tuners I have waiting to go on the neck for the build following my current one. The plates have tabs on both sides and a notch on the housing for the tab to go into. Then I dug into my spares box for tuners and both sets of UMP plates there have tabs on both sides. All of the Hipshot tuners I've used have been the new style for a 25/64" straight ream. I wonder if the old ones with the stepped neck reams were different.

That's a good question.  Now you'll know to double check the spacing of the tabs and not do like me and lose so much sleep over it.  LOL.  :tard:

Yeah. That's for sure.

Damn, I must really be getting old. None of my Hipshot tuners, open or closed have notches, and none of the UMPs in my parts box have tabs on both sides. Now I gotta buy a set of the new style, just so I can see the new design up close......  :glasses9:

I've gone ahead and bent the tabs out.  You can see in these photos that it required them to be bent outward at nearly a 45 degree angle before they would locate properly in the notch in the tuner housings.  You'd think their QC program would be all over something like this.  It wasn't just an "easy bend" either.  It took a few minutes of rigging a pair of pliers with masking to avoid scratching the plate, then as I slowly bent the tabs, I had to check and recheck the alignment...while not overstressing the overall shape of the entire plate.

Thanks for posting those pix. I love Hipshot products, and always found their tuners to be first rate. Glad to see it's working out for you.

Then you'll have to build a new guitar around them...

I’m curious as you did not get these from Hipshot directly, if the reseller offered you incorrect parts? My Hipshot open geared tuners with UMP went on without a hitch.

Brother, I like the way you think!  :icon_thumright:

The OP has the UMP for a 3x3 setup like the pic posted earlier. There's a store on Ebay that sells the UMP stuff seperately.

The packaging looked like it was factory sealed.

Yeah, if the ebay store you are referencing is "sporthitech" then it's the same seller as the one I chose on Reverb, which appears to be the only option for buying UMP's on eBay.  However they only had the same type of plates listed for sale on eBay...or the other type that overlaps, not the inline version that you all seem to have.

Now that I've bent out the tabs I was able to install the tuners last night.  The modification is not noticeable, but what a huge PITA to have to figure this out.  I like the quality of the tuners so I plan to keep everything as-is for now.

Thanks!

Odd.  I source my Hipshot items from SportHiTech.  I’d reach out to them as they have always been responsive to me.

I have been speaking with a fella there named Wayne.  He has been very responsive so far.  There was no offer made to swap the plates but I think it's resolved at least for now.  This morning I wrote him back and informed him that the tuners are installed but this should be a matter taken up by Hipshot's QC department as well.
