help with Finishing roasted ash with try oil

I don't know about roasted ash, or white on dark, but the basic idea is sound:

That how I did my first guitar Swamp Ash, sanding sealer, teak grain filler, then loads of tru-oil

Doesn't work with Alder, though. Grain's too fine and color's too uniform. Finishes on Alder are generally opaque, as the wood's appearance is usually pretty plain.
