Guidance Needed!

Okay, when I was in elementary school, I read a ton. I think there was a book by the same guy who wrote James and the Giant Peach called BFG. Stood for Big Friendly Giant.

Roald Dahl. Great books.

You ever heard of the model/ designer Sophie Dahl? He's her grandfather.

Roald Dahl had lots of fun books.  Back when people used to go to the Library, I went through most of them.  The short stories in, "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, and Six More." was my favorite of the bunch.

As far as the P90 in the neck spot, Tom Shultz of Boston fame did that, and someone else.  I want to say Frampton, but I know his sig model was a three humbucker job.  Not too uncommon.  Actually the CB teles were probably the pioneers of that style, but I don't have proof of that.

Again, welcome.
1. The standard thin neck is probably just fine, I'm not sure you need to go as thin as wizard to get the feel of an SG. Standard thin is fast and pretty thin.
2. The "LP" versus "tele" is only about the shape of the headstock - you can get either shape with any of the neck sizes and shapes.
3. To copy an SG neck more or less, get a conversion scale LP heastock with 1 11/16 nut and the standard thin.
4. The thin body option is probably what you want as well.
5. P90s can have a great, fat, rich sound, but they hum, usually more than strat pickups do (because they are hotter). Just go listen to and play a lot of different pickups and get what you prefer the sound of. Plenty of great music has been made with all kinds of pickups.
6. You must come back and post pictures of your final product, we are all basically like zombies, but we crave pictures of custom guitars instead of fresh brains.  :guitaristgif:
Generally I would agree Tim, but for the neck not in this case. The SG neck is the slimmest fastest neck Gibson has ever made, and it's quite a bit thinner than a standard thin. I have both, and the wizard is much closer to the SG than the standard thin. The standard thin feels more like a standard LP neck to me, almost the same feel as my Explorer.. :icon_biggrin:

I'm gonna beg to slightly differ.  I've got two SG's here that feel pretty close to the standard thin.  They're both SG specials.  I've played the SG classic quite a bit, and its the same neck.  The necks are thinner than the regularly fairly chunky LP necks, but about the same as the standard thin Warmoth.  You have to take the slight width difference into consideration too.  I've played on the reissue SG and its got a THIN neck.  Some of the SG standards have a slimmer neck too.  The SG customs... I played an old one from early 60's, and its neck was actually fairly chunky.  The THICKEST baseball bat, Louisville Slugger neck I've ever seen on any electric, was on an SG Jr from the early 70's.  It was huge.  So, SG's run all over the place.  Mostly they're thin, thinner than Les Paul's and I dunno... if thinner than the standard thin Warmoth, not by much.

SG's are light, and thin, and great to play.  I see why gals like them - the weight.  Old farts like moi, similarly, the back is just not up to toting a LP for any long period.

Hi everybody, I have a few more questions and some clarification:
1.) What sort of battery box do I need for an SG body?
2.) Is a contoured heel on an SG weird?
3.) What does everyone think of a p90 at the neck and a classic '57 at the bridge?
3.) My name is in fact Lisa, but not Lisa Simpson!
Thanks!

3.) Good combo, but you'll need either a light wound P90 or a heavier pickup than a 57 classic at the bridge.  P90's are more powerful than 57 classics by a longshot.  Try something more like a 498T if you want creamy but louder.  If you want a bit more edge, the BB#3 is ok there, but even so, the P90 is one loud pickup (as they're making them lately at least).  A lighter wound Fralin would be a good choice for a P90.

3.) What a co-incidence!  My name isn't Lisa Simpson either!~

LOL, that's always what I think of when I see the BFG guitar.  Roald Dahl was awesome.  Wrote The Witches (which scared the living bejesus out of me as a child), Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

ALSO:  Welcome to the forum, Lisa!  I'm the other girl here.

Your choices all seem perfectly fine to me, the only advice I have is that you should make sure you understand each and every option that is available to you before you decide what you want.  It took me a lot of research time.  I think I changed my mind on certain things 3 or 4 times before I ordered my Les Paul parts.  But if you have any questions, this forum is extremely helpful.

Also, if there is some sort of thing that you want that doesn't appear doable from what it says on the Warmoth site, either call them or email them, because sometimes things are available that you just don't realize.  For example: I was under the impression for a long time that I wouldn't be able to get Wild Maple for my LP body top because it wasn't listed on the LP page.  But then I called and asked them, and they said I could use any piece from the Strat laminate section and as long as it was big enough, they would just use it for a  double laminate.  So that's how I got my amazing gorgeous top for my Lester.

Good luck and have fun.  You're going to become a Warmaholic in no time.

Mine!~ Sorry... BFG's do it for me too.  Dont wanna be no thread stealer or nothin

I have a P-90 neck/Humbucker bridge equipped guitar and I would have to say that =CB= is right on the money.  The combo is excellent, but finding the right humbucker to compliment the P-90 is a challange.  When I first set up my Tele, the volume difference between the P-90 and the Hum was huge.  Setting the Hum way close to the strings helped in my case, and this particular Humbucker (Rio Grande Texas Humbucker) sounds good way close to the strings, so I lucked out.  I could see where this volume difference could be exagerated by a weak bucker, or one that gets too shrill way up near the strings.  You get the right combination, though, and lookout, it's awesome.

My own personal sordid opinion is that the Tele headstock on the SG bodies just doesn't work, if you want to get a "different" look, go the Warmoth headstock rather than the std. Gibson type.

Like CB said, SG necks have been all over the place through the years/reissues, owned a few vintage ones back in the day. There is the slight differential in neck width that I don't really notice, but throws some people off. Overall, closest Warmoth contour is probably Std. Thin. What also throws some people off is that some SG's, like mid-late 60's and some reissues have a shape more like a '59 Roundback, but are thinner than a typical LP.

Best thing to do given the variations is, if you have an SG that belongs to s friend or that you've played in a shop, is go measure the thinckness at the 1st and 12th frets and compare and see what the closest Warmoth profile is to that.

Grover with the screw in bushings.  You can get the "vintage" press bushing Schaller... and they're a little lighter, but the Grover's are easier to fit.  Both are about equal quality.  In one form or another, the Grover is available in black, chrome, (maybe nickel), gold and aged pearloid tulip; black, chrome, nickel and gold bean.  The aged pearloid is available on nickel or gold bodies.
