gibson bashing time! 3 words.

I reckon a Charcoal Silvertone Dymondwood fretboard would be nice, if you're looking for an application of laminated wood for fretboards. (I'm thinking something themed with a nearly monochromatic color scheme; maybe even an industrial kind of look.)

I can't find a good picture of Charcoal Silvertone, but if you imagine this material in grey, that's what it looks like.

My guess is the folks at Rutland (mfrs. of Dymondwood) were among the masterminds behind the Zoot Suit SG's:

Yes, that's Dymondwood, but that looks awful! Keep it quartersawn, and in a monochromatic material.

Well they definitely look to be reaching for new heights in descriptive obfuscation, making plywood fretboards into a virtue. My knowledge of certain aspects of American culture remains willfully- even gleefully - ignorant - is Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz still making fudge with the elite of the American Right, or have they drifted back to their boom-boom girls and Tennessee Twirlers?

Hehe! No kidding. Stay tuned - next up are sonically superior MDF bodies. Now how much would you pay?

I like MDF, but it makes an ugly top, so give me an oriented strand board lam top.

OSB is nice, but it doesn't take stain well. Although, BONUS! You can color it with a Sharpie, and they come in a wide variety of colors...

Nitro is so old-school!

Of course, the purists only use 100% virgin Hewlett-Packard printer ink, for its superior sonic qualities.

Isn't Bondo the only real grain filler with true authentic vintage punk tone? Ahh.... "vintage punk"... they age so well....

The odd thing is, if my instincts don't defy me (heh), those "zoot suit" guitars, if they are constructed somewhat adequately with strings that go somewhere nearly over the pickups and such - they would probably be a really good high-gain "clean" sort of guitar to trigger a modern hard-rock, complicated kind of pedalboard, even a synth (or ring modulator or two :evil4:).

Which has absolutely NOTHING to do with "zoot suits" stylistically, and that era of music (Harlem JAZZ?!?) isn't to be played on what ought to be a respectably high-gain fore-breathing monster.... think an L5, even 335's make a good guitar at that. The marketing of it is a complete disconnect - nobody at Gibson ever plugged it in and played it.

And though I couldn't bear to subject my tender brain to actual factual samples, apparently this "Cherry Poppin Daddy" is like a cut-rate Squirrel Nut Zipper, who in turn were sort-of jump blues cut-rate Brian Setzer wannabees. Hey! I like Brian Setzer! Which also has nothing to do with phenolic guitars. I actually think they're kind of cool, and they're all being sold off the back of the bus at half-price in "MINT!" condition, what a suprise.... when they get to a quarter-price, I may try and BUY one. Obviously, absolutely nobody (including Gibson) has ever listened to one.

ZOOT SUITS?  :icon_scratch: :icon_scratch: :icon_scratch: There is nothing in the appearance, in the social structure, in the probably sound where... aw shit. Gibson. Even "Jazz Age" fashion re: material chunks of stuff was like art deco, right? Hey! I like art deco! Which wasn't Dymondwood either.....

Here, somebody watch this:

I can't - I have to go watch some mold grow or something, but once somebody has figured out why that guy is pimping those guitars, explain it to all of us.

OK- Johnny got a Boom Boom - for the homeless!

It's all too weird hello mold

And Richlite!

I played a Martin 00 with a Richlite fretboard before though, it sounded pretty good as I recall, better than the Taylor 412ce I compared it with. Sometimes they work out. I still like nice chocolatey streaks on my rosewood fretboards though  :icon_biggrin:
