That's a nice piece. It's even chambered! Still heavy, though, at 5.4lbs. But, being rear-routed means you wouldn't have to cover up that nice top. I'm sorely tempted, but I still have several projects including two guitars in process waiting for me to be able to get to and stand up reliably so the shop isn't so scary <grin>

I've really got to find an excuse to use one of those Goncalo Alves necks. I love the feel of the Pau Ferro neck I've got, and I understand the GA is supposed to be very similar.

It feels great man, you can really feel the grain and wood. I find it hard to believe all guitars aren't like that.

I've really gotta find an excuse to spend the money to go the exotic rout!

The problem for me getting into exotic woods was that I really couldn't appreciate how great it looks, I thought it all looks terrible and the grain all disorganised and none geometric (i have a thing for order) and then I slapped myself in the face and started to see how amazing some pieces of wood can really look, GA is what really blew me away though. Something about the colour and grain of certain pieces that really blew me away. Once i get the frets rounded and the edge of the fretboard sanded to be a bit less sharp then this thing will be an absolute beast.

Well - I do not agree on that. To me the feel of the two types are far from similar. Pau Ferro is a lot more slick and smooth feeling where as Goncalo has a more "dusty" feel to it. I love them both ... but similar feel ... not in my book.  :dontknow:

Oddly enough, it's not always that much more expensive since they don't always require a finish. For instance, a maple/ebony neck is less expensive to build, but then you've got to spend between $75 and $155 to put a finish on it. If you do Pau Ferro/Ebony, it costs more but you don't need a finish. So, while it might still be a more expensive neck, it's not as bad as you might imagine. Look around the Showcase, and price up a few that way. For example, with a Maple/Ebony neck by the time you put stainless frets, a Graphtec nut and a clear satin finish on it, it's $372. A Pau Ferro/Ebony neck with the same frets and nut would only be $317, because it doesn't need a finish. A Goncalo Alves/Ebony neck with the same frets and nut can be as low as $265. Your mileage may vary because of inlays, construction style, etc. but that should give you a rough idea how some people are pulling off the exotics.

Good to know. I was just going by the descriptions, not having actually had the two to compare.

I having a hard time determining this... is the base color of goncalo somewhat similar to canary? They both seem yellow/light brown to me, sorta like a vintage tinted maple. Never seen either in person, so I can only go buy pictures.

You know what would be cool... Warmoth should take one of each kind of neck and do a group shot, so you can compare them all at once. Their photographer takes great pictures.

goncalo is a wierd one, in certain lights it can look dark and tan-like, but on others it can look really golden and shimery. like most of the pictures you see of goncalo on the warmoth site always has that golden glow to it, but in other lights it can look alot darker. But it looks and feels amazing, im probably gonna go with goncalo all the time with any future guitars i might want.

I've had my goncalo neck for about six months now and it is not at all yellow, I'm sure it's darkened since I got it. If anything I'd say it's more toward orange than yellow? NOT to say it IS orange, it just looks more towards the orangey side of brown to me tan the yellow side...

And after playing it about an hour a day since then, I have to say it feels amazing... it felt good to begin with but it's even better now that it's got some time on it.

My Goncalo neck looked fairly cream colored with dark stripes in the pictures, but when I got it I found that it was much redder than anything I've seen online. More like a clay color. While I think it's beautiful in its own right, i felt the color clashed with the gold hardware on the guitar. I'd love it to have a more coffee/tan kind of hue

They all come in different colours i guess, i would have to say mine is more tan then orange with lots of dark stripes.

Mine matches beautifully with the gold hardware, i have gold frets on the bugger too. and i honestly think it depends on the light when its night time i feel the whole clay thing, but in daylight it totally shimmers nicely. especially with the gold hardware.
