Hmmmm, flame Koa on Koa, I like it.  :headbang1:

Now, now, DbU, you already have one.  Save the goodies for those less fortunate.

Yea that looks almost identical to the flame koa on your soloist, Dbu.

No body is worth that much in my opinion. But, it is awesome. I think koa is just too expensive. Good thing though, otherwise this exclusively Hawaiian wood would go extinct.  :-\

:laughing7:

I actually like my top better because it has more character in my opinion. But that Koa back looks pretty damn good compared to my mahogany. Warmoth should have made that Koa back in 1-piece though.  :headbang1:

For sure, your piece of koa is one of the best I've seen! It has more color variation than this one here.

Another nice one that I've seen is Kuro's.

Acacia koa
Plant
Acacia koa is a species of flowering tree in the pea family, Fabaceae. It is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, where it is the second most common tree.

So it's used for paneling, floors, decks, pretty much just what they'd call "wood." but the natives likely get a  kick out of selling "rare & endangered" wood to the ignorant haoles when all they did was saw off a chunk of what's lying around the back yard. What makes me think it ain't really Ken Warmoth tearing around the jungles murdering the last of the good'uns is that - it mostly goes into floors for rich people. Now cabinetry I can see, even, umm, turned bowls (though I suspect pretty much all of a basement woodturner's friends, relatives and coworkers have enough bowls, rolling pins, duckcalls and pens to last them a good long while.)

There is still a small but fierce tradition of really, really fine woodworking on rich people's yachts - now that I can see. But purpleheart, zebrawood, koa, padookie & shedua just for a floor for rich people to romp & stomp about on as they envision ever-more-fiendish ways to financially and spiritually enslave us downtrodden linoleum dwellers... I hope the cocobolo does make 'em itch where it counts.

Seems like a waste of a nice lam top.  If the figuring on the front was anything like that back, that Koa should've been left as-is.

Love it.

I just can't get into the MK finishes. To me it looks like a shop class finish as in "if you were doing this for your self, we'd use many more coats of paint. But because it's shop, and has to fit in between algebra and history, we're gonna slap one coat of thinned cheap as we could find paint and call it done.
