Football Follies... ?

Why is it that everytime somebody mentions the best sport in the world some Pom has to chime in about soccer. You know what we're talking about yet someone still feels the need to spout off about her majesty's royal game of footsy. Soccer is for children at the YMCA and hot MILFS in minivans. :party07:

Football is for skillful athletes, NFL is for fat oafs and perverts with mobile phones apparently.

That's such a stupid comment. You mean to tell me no soccer player has ever done anything wrong? There are alot of other positions on the field besides a lineman. Even still they are the most atrhletic 300 lb + people you will ever see. Just go drink a guiness or a fosters and start a riot cuz your group of pansy homos lost a 3 hour long match by a score of 1-0. Go ahead and see how many people you can trample all in the name of watching your favorite young men running around playing a glorified version of kick the can.

Floppers! I heard Christiano Ronaldo is looking to play for the Jets..  :laughing7:

Hey, guys . . . I'm American and may I just say, the foreigners are right on this one.

First, http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_most_watched_sport_in_the_world

(also, I do believe that these two sports on a skill/athletics level are like comparing apples and oranges. Soccer requires much higher skills, but in less diversity. Football has more diversity in skill between all the players. Some guys can run fast, some can catch, some can block, but they rarely switch roles. However, you'd never have the throwing guy trying to block.)

Here's why I say soccer wins. First off, it IS the most watched sport in the world, there's no denying that. Second, those guys play pretty much NON-STOP, sometimes for over an hour (wheras in football, they fiddle around for 20 seconds then take a 45 second break. and after that, you watch ads for five minutes.)

Also, the argument that football wins because they make more money is stupid (and I don't even know if they do or not.) Football makes more money because (like all friggin American TV,) nearly half of it is advertisement. That's also why soccer will never catch the big time in the USA. Television companies can't make enough advertisement money off of airing it.

There are sooo many things wrong with this. So what you are saying is you have officially defected right?? You see way more corporate sponsorship with soccer than you do football. What little bit of the FIFI that I saw there were logos plastered all over the place. Soccer doesn't catch on in the US because it is boring as hell. People don't want to watch it here. If so you can garauntee it would be broadcast. I am not arguing which is better, that is pointless. I do not like it and will never be convinced of how great it is. :headbang1:

While football is, more or less a North American sport (Mexico likes it, Canada playes the game about 85% of the way we do), there is one other international sport I am more of a fan of--hockey. While, mind you, not many countries north of the Tropic of Cancer follow or participate on an international scale, hockey does offer a couple of minor similarities that soccer does. Namely, play is, for the most part continuous, and there is a net with a goaltender, as well as having the benefit of an international field for the game.

In addition, hockey lays claim to having one of the most outspoken representatives of the game. Anyone who has ever watched "Hockey Night in Canada,"  or lived in Boston in the seventies knows who Don Cherry is.

If the outfits don't make you laugh, his comments will:

this is definitely true. hell, in soccer there are logos on the jerseys!

and i have to agree that it hasn't caught on here like it has in the rest of the world because it's just a slow game. going to a sporting arena so sit and stand around for 90 minutes so that a game could end in a 0 to 0 tie just isn't interesting to me. even watching the world cup on TV wasn't appealing. i tried watching a few of the later matches, but it's actually really aggravating to watch the medical staff run onto the field to cart off a guy who everybody in the stadium knew was just faking an injury. everybody knew he'd be back out there in 5 minutes, but they stop the game for that crap anyway.

they might take breaks between football plays to call a new play, but i guarantee you somebody will end up scoring. not always the case in soccer.

yes, but the advertisers don't get hardly any air time, which is like gold to them. the teams, leagues and stadiums probably make more money off of the banners and jersey ads than the TV guys do.

Is this real football or American football?

no, not the pretend you got tripped and lay on the ground for 20 minutes hoping for a yellow card football. this is the real thing :icon_biggrin:

Sorry boys: this NFL stuff ain't football.

Nice picture of some school team, no, we're talking Professional Football not Soccer.

American professional football, aka the NFL is the most popular sport in the world (by a landslide) in terms of
people that have a television and what they watch on said television, the money the sport generates, and the
sheer numbers of people that follow the game.

Soccer is the most popular in terms of what a few mates can do on a otherwise boring day, as it only requires a round ball.

I Like how you think the world is America. I can tell you that in Europe, football is much much bigger in terms of revenue and people who watch tv.

NFL essentially doesn't exist in Europe, or anywhere else in the world.

ha, isnt that what i said?  :icon_tongue:
