First Warmoth Project

Yes I have considered a clear pick guard and it is likely going to be my "final" option if nothing else will do the job.

You know, I'm more of a flame-maple guy than a birdseye guy - but that neck is F-ing beautiful!

Updated Picture of Swamp Thing

Almost Done

SwampthingA-272x600.jpg

I'll be adding the new chrome pickup rings and black plastic today.

Very close to being done. I still have to connect the input jack wires to the pots and install the strings, and have the neck and intonation adjusted and the frets dressed. I am waiting on a few more pickguards. So far this is my favorite configuration.

Wow, that turned out nice! I really like the shape of that control panel; the point at the top, the notch for the pickup ring. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

By the way, how close did that notch come to the hole for the volume pot?

The only way it could be better is if the middle bits were somehow held in place by the chrome rings and didn't need screws.

I think that configuration has it nailed, although I might take the points off of what's left of the control cover. Makes it look like something is missing when there's not. There are transition points where there's nothing to transition to because the meeting place doesn't exist any more.

Biggus the notch was so close that you can probably see thru the pickguard material. The beauty is that the washers on the pot hold the pickup ring in place on that side. I am picking up an all black guard today.

I thought of that as well so I built a rounded control cover too. The rounded cover was to far from the original to help maintian the stratocaster identity. I wanted everyone/anyone who knows guitars to be able to look at it and know that it was a standard strat pickguard cut down to its minimalist form. I also wanted to have the hole near the point for mouniting purposes. The transition points are a apreciated however, I really wanted the guard to make the statement that it is a Stratocaster. I think it will take some time to get used to. I look at it and feel as though I forgot to mount something, which is exactly what you are saying it looks like something is missing but its not. On the other hand we have been conditioned to see a stratocaster as it has always been. The thing is I do kinda feel like I am messing with a classic. We'll see as others comment. Thanks for your comments as well.

+1

Or, if you must use pickguard material between the pickups on that strip, use one that resembles a trimming strip that is used on the binding materials?

How wide is that rout between the pickups?

It's exactly 1/2". I know because I routed a pickguard to match the body route, and a 1/2" bit barely made it through that channel...

Why would I do such a thing? Because I wanted something to set on the back of a new pickguard during wiring so I knew where there was clearance for wires. Wiring up a pickguard and trying to make it set on a body without wires in the way between the pickguard and the body is a pain in the shorts. With this template, the pickguard falls right into place with no goofing around.

So I made an aluminum piece and polished it to go between the neck and middle pick up. I didn't think it looked as good as the black pickguard material. I have black pickguard screws on the way and will try them also. I'll post a pick of the guitar with the aluminum in a little while.

I also have a copper guard on the way and some aluminum to make an aluminum control plate.
