First Warmoth Project

Those are some interesting ideas! Why pay premium bucks for a beautiful top and finish, then cover 50% of it up with a pickguard?

Gonna have to think about this one.

I know man, in my case - its a shame I have to cover my beautiful custom paint with a pickguard.  :sad1:

I'll probably cut the pick guard down while trying to follow the curves of the short horn side of the body. Maybe a blend of the first and last pictures on this page. Waiting on Calaham parts right now. Anyone tried the Detemple titanium stuff? Is it any good?

So here is where I am so far:

Made a cutdown prototype pickguard that turned out OK. I have two at the local machine shop in fabrication. One is solid black pickguard material, the other is .10 aluminum I plan to polish. I mocked everyhting up and so far I am in the middle as far as looks go. I have a few more parts on order and will likely have it finished in another week or two. The pickguards I am having fabricated will be much more symetrical than the turtle shell in the mock photo.

Definately more screws for attachment. Likely 8 total. 3 on the control cavity and 5 parallel to the pickup mounting screws.

personally I would taper the transition from neck to middle and middle to bridge with a little more curve so that it looks less like E.T.s head and neck. but its an interesting pickguard!

I have had two "intersting" comments. I think most are on the fence about it. Has no one ever contemplated a pick guard like this before???

I guess for most of us we like smoother lines, not quite cut in so much. But do what works for you because it is your guitar.

BWT, nice score, I remember seeing that body in the showcase and thought wow, that's nice.

I see what you mean. I think the two pick guards I have at the machine shop will look much better than this one. The will likely be much more symetric from one side to the other and will be darker colored than the tortoise shell material I made the prototype out of.

Yea I went back and forth on the body several times, But my wife and my daughter both said it was the one to get. It is very different from all my other guitars. Like I said this is my first build. All my other guitars are store bought.

I'm thinkin something like this would look sexy with strips of matte black pickguard material to cover the wire channels and connect the rings. Then a nice control plate made of the guard material too. I think the matte black would be nice and subdued and compliment the crazy figure and all the bling.

I like those too, I am putting a chrome one on my tele and omitting the pickguard.

I bought 3 chrome single coil rings two days ago. I may be doing exactly what your are talking about. I have the black pickguard material alrady. I think we are imagining the same thing.

I do want to wait and see how the aluminum guard comes out after I polish it. It will be cut like the tortoise shell guard in the picture. I am having a black guard cut the same way as well on a laser

cutting system that the machine shop uses to make the faceplates for my amplifiers. More test pictures to follow. Thanks all for your constructive critisism and suggestions.

What about a clear pg with airbrushing behind to cover the cavities? Like the paisley tele:

Might make it a little more traditional looking... I don't know if you consider that a good or a bad thing.
