Creative, technical, and talented, but lacking emotion IMO.

why not?

-his tone gives me a headache
-annoying note-choice
-where's the build up, the construction of the music? its just hammering out notes at random!
-Steve Vai is an annoying, pesky little man. so full of himself.

Should I go on? ;)

doesn't mean a thing to me, since I know that this is coming from a guy who thinks rudy mustache schenker is the best guitarist, and Der Scorpions is the best band ever..

There's something wrong with Steve Vai's face. I think he's a robot.... programmed to "emote" by the same guys who did Max Headroom - need to upgrade that software, Steve-O!  :headbang:

it's just a face.. who cares
it's not that he is wearing a mask and a KFC bucket on his head (God knows how horrible he looks when he is playing.)

For pure feel/soul/mojo, it don't get any better than this:

...oh, sorry.

I actually meant this tune:

And dig Da Koss's wild vibrato... it's like small, furry, squeaking animals flying out of his guitar!

steve only wishes he could play this fast (and own this guitar)

Both DBW and Orpheo are annoying pesky little men.... so full of themselves... :tard:

As my work requires me to spend 3-4 hours a day on the computer, I have gotten intimately addicted to sugarmegs.org - 20,000 concerts and growing! The best Zappa I've heard by far isn't Zappa, but his kid Dweezil's band "Zappa plays Zappa". There's still a lot of infantile homor that's funny once ( and oo-only once) but the playing is great. Dweezil worked really hard on his playing to get in shape for this stuff. Here's a good-sounding show:

There's a lot of Zappa tribute bands  :icon_scratch: under "F", for Frank (one would assume....) Are there really like five European Zappa tribute bands?  :eek:ccasion14:

Stub - I thought infantile humor was your specialty? :icon_scratch: :laughing7:

ZPZ is great but it doesn't beat the real thing.

Are there really like five European Zappa tribute bands?

Yeah for some reason they love him over there - silly europeans! :laughing7:

I don't get the Steve Vai music, at all. Glad some others like it, but I don't care for it at all.

And i agree about his "Max Headroom" facial contortions. It's all over-the-top cheesy to me. And the plexiglass guitar.

I'm watching that last Vai video now (Now We Run) and I think that's just how he naturally looks when he's soloing. Everyone is different in that respect, some people barely move a muscle in their faces, some look like their having a bowel movement etc. A very famous guitarist here in Sweden, Janne Schaffer, always has his tongue sticking out from the corner of his mouth. Apparently he tried to keep it in once, but then his playing collapsed...
Vai is a US frontman and entertainer, so I'd be far more surprised if he didn't do a lot of stuff on stage even though they don't contribute much the the actual sound he's making.

On a side note... A couple of years ago when I was in the student theatre band, one of saxophone girls came up with a theory after watching the lead gutiarist do a solo: That a player's solo face is the same as their orgasm face. We had a lot of fun at practice after that!  :icon_jokercolor:

Lead guitarist for The Angels, Rick Brewster, stands perfectly still, wears dark shades and pulls no facial expressions throughout the whole gig!
Been doing that for ages. States some stupid reason usually when asked.

But a closer look at his rig reveals that his main amp is a small Marshall combo, and given the volume that The Angels used to play at in their heyday, he'd have to stand very close to it to hear it, or move up to the front of the stage near the monitors. If he stayed still upfront on the stage, The Angels vocalist, Doc Neeson would have barrelled him! Doc used to play games with him  the whole show trying to solicit a response.
This vid clip taken from 1983 Narara Festival. This gig was highlighted as one of the best shows put on by an Aussie act ever. This was when The Angels were at their best and ripped the place apart. Up there with Thorpie at Sunbury (1970s) in best Aussie shows.

**Marko wanted me to add something**

Dear Orpheo,

Here's the thing.. Steve Vai is famous for his guitar playing.. You reading this, probably aren't as famous..

Here's the other thing.. he doesn't make fun of you..  he doesn't even know you.

But remember this.. if he did know you, he'd sure make fun of you heh heh.. probly call your tone crap too.

:hello2:

don't forget about buckallred..
I'd rather be a famous for my max headroom guitar sour pickle face than for being able to lick my own boob.

Well, I was referring to Vai, but I'm sure Marko would say his tone sucks too.  :laughing7:

That headroom is mine. Vai better stop it.

After his first show with Zappa in 1980, Steve Vai asked Frank for an honest appraisal of his first night with the group. "He said, 'Your playing is really great, but your tone sounds like an electric ham sandwich.' " laughs Vai.
