So, we all know that you can't go wrong with a "burst" styled paint job on a classic, rounded instrument like a Tele, Strat, Jazz/P bass, Les Paul, etc.

Does anyone have some good examples of burst paint jobs on the more exotic shapes? Iceman? Explorer? Z body? Just wondering how the increase in angles works with the bursting balance.

I don't have a photo example, but I remember last century back in the early days of MTV you'd often see Explorer shaped guitars by Hamer or Dean that had bursts.  I remember seeing traditional colored bursts and blue bursts.  I always thought it looked cool, but YMMV.

You mean like these?

Also a few here;

Hamer had their problems, but pretty was never one of them.
Sad to see them gone :sad1:

Here's a black dyed blackburst-edged 'Splorer - last fancy one in the showcase.

I'd say they did a good job. The burst edge is pretty narrow, so if you're one of the Gibson wide-burst enthusiasts, this wouldn't likely do it for you.

And there's some burst-painted pointy-Vee guitars here:

So, it seems like they have to keep the burst very narrow in order to make it work effectively on the more angular offerings? And typically over a very figured top with either real or masked binding to set it off?

Any thoughts as to whether that's the "official" recipe?

Somebody had a cool project going with a Z body. It was a Strat style guitar except for the Z body shape, and had a sunburst finish.

That's my '54 Z - it hasn't been painted for real yet, but I did a mockup that shows what the vintage burst would look like.
