Just recently finished this one. Though I had trepidation about burning over $600 in fresh wood, I think it came out WAY better than expected. Though not for everyone this may be inspiration for some.

Many of the finish snobs warned me against it.......I'd do it again!  :headbang:

OH AND YES I PLAY METAL! hahaha.

STATS:
• Burnt alder with tru-oil body
• Burnt Birds Eye Maple 24 3/4" Pro Conversion Neck, Ebony Board, MOP inlay.......true oil on maple.
• Black hardware
• Vintage flat black pickguard
• Carvin M22SD pickup
• Original Floyd Rose with R3 Locking Nut
• Schaller locking tuners (not for tuning stability but fore ease when changing strings)

Thanks for checking her out!

Certainly...

I used a regular blue canister blow torch for the job. I went slow at first until I got the hang of burning the wood how I liked. At first it just darkened up the grain a bit. I knew I wanted some deep black parts especially on the top horn of the guitar. So I started burning there rather than "toasting" the wood on that part first.

Once I started getting use to how the flame was reacting with the alder I just went to town.

The maple burned different being a harder wood. At first I didn't know what I was going for on the neck but once I saw how the edges burned and it had a "binding" look to it. I loved what it was doing and just burned it hard on the edges and a lighter toasted look on the face and back.

If any one wants to do this I would say all pieces of wood, even the same type of woods, will burn differently so be cautious at first and be careful. Then again if you go overboard you can always stand back.....if you are taking your time and not burning to deeply.

I even touched up some burnt parts that wore off after oiling and then sanding back........so durring the finishing I did some touch up burns. It was good fun.........but a bit scary.

Or like this ;) : http://www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=14294.msg202880#msg202880

anyway, I love it.. except the numbers on the vol knob hurt my eyes... and no dots would have been even better!! :)
great guitar anyway!

HAHAHA! I thought about it.......but the burn comes out a little sloppy. LOL! RIP Jimi!  :rock-on:

Looks awesome, I like the charred look, but it's missing something a little special right here.... :laughing7:

Then you could christen it with the JD bottle.. :icon_biggrin:

That is a really cool take on the "torched" finish, I like it a lot!! :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

Nice job, I was going to burst to clear a swamp ash SG with green stain in the near future, I might torch the edges like that.  :eek:ccasion14:

Looks fabulous!

I'm kind of wondering about you using locking tuners along with the locking nut - personally I'd shy away from adding that much mass up there, but if it works for you, then it works...

Thanks everyone!

Yeah, the locking tuners have always been a staple. I hate winding strings especially when on tour and gigging a ton. It seriously cuts string changes on the floyd in half for me. It's more practical than anything.

For the neck plate......yeah if I could find a JD label neck plate I would replace it, lol.  :icon_thumright:

Yeah tru-oil for the seal.....does a great job just smell like ass, lol.

How much of that JD did you have to consume before getting the courage to take a blow torch to $600 worth of wood?
