Black Satin neck, no go?

Hello there.

I just had a few e-mails back and forth between me and Spike from Warmoth about a neck I have in mind.

The idea is to get a neck finished with Black Satin, however Spike told me this was not possible as it would get some ugly shiny spots.
Could someone tell me what causes these spots he is talking about? And is there any way to avoid them?

Over time, your hand is going to buff up the satin until it starts to polish into a gloss.

In any case, forget necks with finishes on them! Raw wood is the way to go! :blob7:

Well, I know with satin finishes (ala clear satin nitro) as you use the neck over time, that satin will turn to gloss. So the only
way to avoid that is to not play the guitar...  :tard:

Haha I agree, raw wood feels really good. But I hower would really like an all black neck, and with finishes, satin feels best(at least to me).

But well, if it glosses do to wear, I can probably live with that, or else I might just end up getting only the peghead finished.

Spike is right, it will gloss up in areas, and they may be undesirable.  However, I don't know why he would say it isn't possible.  It's just not adviseable.  They even say they can match neck and body finishes on the site, as long as they are sprayed together.

I would ask again, saying you understand the future drawbacks to using the neck, but would like it anyways.

I'm really torn now  :tard:

I'm not super picky when it comes to worn looks, but as I have not seen how the black satin wears I can't make up my mind. Does anyone have pictures of this they can post?
Cause I would really like to avoid glossy black as I've already had 3 guitars with this, and I just end up cleaning them more than playing from all the fingerprints and other smudges that gets on them.

it's a plastic abrasive pad available in different grades - from kitchen / paint stripping to fine & polishing

@ super turbo deluxe: i searched around the forum where i found some topics with you talking about your guitars with satin finishes and their wear. Could you possibly post pics or link to previously posted pics, so i can get an idea of what i might have to deal with?

You can use steel wool to take the gloss off, as well.

Be sure the neck is removed from the body to avoid getting the wool in your pickup magnets, though.

Here is the deal on color necks and bodies with satin finishes. The nitro satin we use on the necks shows scuffs very easily on solid and dark colors. We have had problems in the past with customers complaining about finish flaws when they open the box and the packing material has rubbed a shiny spot or a scuff in the finish. These scuffs and shiny spots are not visable on clear or vintage tint finishes for the most part, but man if that body or neck is a black satin nitro finish it will scuff or shine up if you look at it wrong. We switched to a harder poly matte finish for bodies that does not scuff nearly as easy and takes much longer to shine up in high wear areas. Your probably saying why do you guys not spray neck with it, well it is a much rougher finish and would not feel fast and smooth on a neck. Could we nitro satin a neck black yes, as long as it's not an all maple neck. Would we want to hear about any finish flaws or funky wear issues no. Skelton if your still interested PM me for price and full details.

Pictures of what, exactly?
You know what a gloss finish looks like, don't you? Just picture the spots your hand contacts the most taking on a dull shine.

Thank you Sean, but if the necks really wear as fast as you say, then i have to find an alternative.
I thought the finish would be tougher, bummer.

*Cough* Raw neck woods. *Cough*

Haha exactly what i'm thinking. Thinking of going with indian rosewood and just matching headstock

Instead of painting a neck black, just get a wenge neck.  It's almost black.  I've had a wenge neck for a day now and am absolutely in love with it.

Wenge is brown, nowhere close to black.

How about a Rosewood neck with that black dye that StewMac sells for "ebonizing" fretboards? Would that work well?
